Abstract: Several properties are developed for a recently proposed algorithm for the design of block quantizers based either on a probabilistic source model or on a long training sequence of data. Conditions on the source and general distortion measures under which the algorithm is well defined and converges to a local minimum are provided. A variation of the ergodic theorem is used to show that if the source is block stationary and ergodic, then in the limit as n → ∝, the algorithm run on a sample distribution of a training sequence of length n will produce the same result as if the algorithm were run on the “true” underlying distribution.

The high-rate queueing discipline is based on a scan table-based dequeueing scheme having a scan table that is precomputed and stored in memory, thus facilitating rapid processing of different traffic class information. The device and method are particularly useful in a fast packet system.

Abstract: Low-rate vector quantizers are designed and simulated for highly correlated Gauss-Markov sources and the resulting performance is compared with Arnstein's optimized predictive quantizer and with Huang and Schultheiss' optimized transform coder. Two implementations of vector quantizers are considered: full search vector quantizers-which are optimal but require large codebook searches-and tree searched vector quantizers-which are suboptimal but require far less searching. The various systems are compared on the basis of performance, complexity, and generality of design techniques.

This new recursive least-squares (RLS) estimation algorithm has a computational complexity similar to the conventional RLS algorithm, but is more robust to roundoff errors and has a highly modular structure, suitable for VLSI implementation. Its properties and features are discussed and compared to other LS estimation algorithms.

Abstract: On linear bandlimited Gaussian noise channels with sufficiently high SNR, channel capacity can be approached by combining powerful coded modulation schemes designed for Nyquist channels with the equalization power of decision-feedback equalization (DFE). However, this combination may not be realized in a straightforward manner, since, in general, DFE requires delay-free decisions for feedback, and in a coded system such decisions are not sufficiently reliable. A technique is proposed that combines periodic interleaving with noise-predictive DFE, so that delayed reliable decisions can be used for feedback. When sufficient delay in the interleavers can be tolerated, this technique can attain the DFE performance. On severely distorted channels, modest delays can be sufficient to obtain respectable gains over linear equalization. >
