TL;DR: In this article, the Crick Report, Citizenship and the Teaching of Democracy in Schools, was used to provide a "viewpoint" on citizenship education in the UK and explored the implications of this for government, the education sector and schools.
Abstract: Draws on the 1998 Crick Report, Citizenship and the Teaching of Democracy in Schools, to provide a “viewpoint” on citizenship education in the UK. Summarises the purpose and nature of citizenship education in schools and then explores the implications of this for government, the education sector and schools. Stresses the relationship between emerging political thinking, societal values and citizenship education and that the “challenge” is to nurture a new political consensus with active citizenship at its heart. Assesses the prospects for citizenship education and utilises case study data to illustrate positive developments and encouraging practice, although conclusions as to whether citizenship education can ultimately achieve a change in the political culture of the country remain essentially speculative.

TL;DR: The authors explored the origins, value, impact and likely development of student tutoring in the UK, whereby students from universities and colleges volunteer to work alongside teachers for an afternoon a week over a period of at least ten weeks, helping pupils with their studies.
Abstract: Explores the origins, value, impact and likely development of student tutoring in the UK, whereby students from universities and colleges volunteer to work alongside teachers for an afternoon a week over a period of at least ten weeks, helping pupils with their studies, raising their aspirations and encouraging them to go on to further and higher education. Notes a dramatic expansion of this programme in recent years, involving more than 180 institutions of higher and further education. Highlights how CSV Learning Together, following the initiative of BP, has established a nationwide team of development workers to implement the movement nationwide. Confirms, from initial research, the value of the initiative to both pupils and their student tutors. Foresees that the new directions in student tutoring will spread the work increasingly in further education and encourage schools to cascade peer‐supported learning among their own pupils.

TL;DR: Using an ecological systems approach, the authors explored the experiences of different groups of young people living in areas of socio-economic disadvantage, and found that barriers and motivators for young people stem from within the micro, meso, exo and macro systems, and that these interact with each other, and with bio-psychological factors within individuals, to bring about differential opportunities and outcomes.
Abstract: Young people are increasingly required to demonstrate civic engagement in their communities and help deliver the aspirations of localism and Big Society. Using an ecological systems approach this paper explores the experiences of different groups of young people living in areas of socio-economic disadvantage. Using volunteering as an example of civic engagement it is shown that barriers and motivators for young people stem from within the micro, meso, exo and macrosystems, and that these interact with each other, and with bio-psychological factors within individuals, to bring about differential opportunities and outcomes for young people. Through examining the experiences of three different groups of young people placed within socio-economically disadvantaged communities, considerable variation in levels of civic engagement are identified and it is suggested that some young people's lived experiences are resulting in decisions to civically disengage. It is argued that young people need to benefit...

TL;DR: In this article, the authors identify who is using the resources, how they are using them and what form of citizenship education is developing as a result, and suggest that there is now a clear citizenship teacher education community that uses common resources for a variety of purposes.
Abstract: In order to understand better the way in which the emerging field of citizenship education is being characterised we reflect on work emerging from a higher education network (citizED) for citizenship education. Three of the four authors of this article are closely involved in that network. CitizED was established with funding from the Teacher Training Agency (TTA) (now the Training and Development Agency for Schools, TDA) in order to establish a network and provide resources to support the initial training of citizenship teachers. We analysed download data from the network's website, a sample of the resources produced by the network, and interviewed a sample of users and developers. In this article we identify who is using the resources, how they are using them and what form of citizenship education is developing as a result. We argue that there is now a clear citizenship teacher education community that uses common resources for a variety of purposes. We suggest that there is some consensus in relation t...
