Abstract: The rhetoric of Quebec sovereignty is based upon an appeal to a particular motivated subject, the Quebecois. Rhetorical theory usually takes such a subject as a given. A theory of constitutive rhetoric, based on the principle of identification, can account for the constitution of subjects of this type. Such subjects, agents within ideological discourse, are interpellated or called into being through rhetorical narratives. Such narratives constitute collective political subjects through a series of formal discursive effects. These effects result in a discursively constituted subjectivity that can form the basis for an ideological appeal to action.

Abstract: Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies investigating the acquisition of sequential motor skills in humans have revealed learning-related functional reorganizations of the cortico-striatal and cortico-cerebellar motor systems accompanied with an initial hippocampal contribution. Yet, the functional significance of these activity-level changes remains ambiguous as they convey the evolution of both sequence-specific knowledge and unspecific task ability. Moreover, these changes do not specifically assess the occurrence of learning-related plasticity. To address these issues, we investigated local circuits tuning to sequence-specific information using multivariate distances between patterns evoked by consolidated or newly acquired motor sequences production. The results reveal that representations in dorsolateral striatum, prefrontal and secondary motor cortices are greater when executing consolidated sequences than untrained ones. By contrast, sequence representations in the hippocampus and dorsomedial striatum becomes less engaged. Our findings show, for the first time in humans, that complementary sequence-specific motor representations evolve distinctively during critical phases of skill acquisition and consolidation.

Abstract: Rats have a natural tendency to spend more time exploring novel objects than familiar objects, and this preference can be used as an index of object recognition. Rats also show an exploratory preference for objects in locations where they have not previously encountered objects (an index of place memory) and for familiar objects in contexts different from those in which the objects were originally encountered (an index of context memory). In this experiment, rats with cytotoxic lesions of the hippocampal formation were tested on all three versions of the novelty-preference paradigm, with a 5-min retention interval between the familiarization and test phases. Rats with sham lesions displayed a novelty preference on all three trial types, whereas the rats with hippocampal lesions displayed a novelty preference on Object trials but did not discriminate between the objects on Place trials or Context trials. The findings indicate that hippocampal damage impairs memory for contextual or spatial aspects of an experience, whereas memory for objects that were part of the same experience are left relatively intact.

Abstract: The synthesis using the thermal decomposition of metal trifluoroacetates is being widely used to prepare oleate-capped lanthanide-doped upconverting NaYF4:Er3+/Yb3+ nanoparticles (Ln-UCNPs). These nanoparticles have no inherent aqueous dispersibility and inconvenient postsynthesis treatments are required to render them water dispersible. Here, we have developed a novel and facile approach to obtain water-dispersible, ligand-free, brightly upconverting Ln-UCNPs. We show that the upconversion luminescence is affected by the local environment of the lanthanide ions at the surface of the Ln-UCNPs. We observe a dramatic difference of the integrated upconverted red:green emission ratio for Ln-UCNPs dispersed in toluene compared to Ln-UCNPs dispersed in water. We can enhance or deactivate the upconversion luminescence by pH and H/D isotope vibronic control over the competitive radiative and nonradiative relaxation pathways for the red and green excited states.
