Abstract: A novel method is presented for the specific and direct detection of bacteria using bacteriophages as recognition receptors immobilized covalently onto functionalized screen-printed carbon electrode (SPE) microarrays. The SPE networks were functionalized through electrochemical oxidation in acidic media of 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)carbodiimide (EDC) by applying a potential of +2.2 V to the working electrode. Immobilization of T4 bacteriophage onto the SPEs was achieved via EDC by formation of amide bonds between the protein coating of the phage and the electrochemically generated carboxylic groups at the carbon surface. The surface functionalization with EDC, and the binding of phages, was verified by time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry. The immobilized T4 phages were then used to specifically detect E. coli bacteria. The presence of surface-bound bacteria was verified by scanning electron and fluorescence microscopies. Impedance measurements (Nyquist plots) show shifts of the order of 10(4) Omega due to the binding of E. coli bacteria to the T4 phages. No significant change in impedance was observed for control experiments using immobilized T4 phage in the presence of Salmonella. Impedance variations as a function of incubation time show a maximum shift after 20 min, indicating onset of lysis, as also confirmed by fluorescence microscopy. Concentration-response curves yield a detection limit of 10(4) cfu/mL for 50-microL samples.

Abstract: In this paper, a method for continuous flow separation of circulating malignant cells from blood in a microfluidic device using dielectrophoresis is discussed. Separation of MDA231 breast cancer cells after mixing with normal blood cells was achieved with a level of accuracy that enabled precise counting of the malignant cells, separation and eventually, sub-culturing. MDA231 cells were separated from the blood to a daughter channel using two pairs of interdigitated activated comb-like electrode structures. All experiments are performed with conductivity adjusted medium samples. The electrode pairs were positioned divergent and convergent with respect to the flow. The AC signals used in the separation are 20 V peak-to-peak with frequencies of 10-50 kHz. The separation is based on balance of magnitude of the dielectrophoretic force and hydrodynamic force. The difference in response between circulating malignant cells and normal cells at a certain band of alternating current frequencies was used for rapid separation of cancer cells from blood. The significance of these experimental results is discussed in this paper, with detailed reporting on the suspension medium, preparation of cells, flow condition and the fabrication process of the microfluidic chip. The present technique could potentially be applied to identify incident cancer at a stage and size that is not yet detectable by standard diagnostic techniques (imaging and biochemical testing). Alternatively, it may also be used to detect cancer recurrences.

Abstract: Relay-assisted FSO systems were proposed as a means for remedying the effects of the various atmospheric impairments on the quality of the FSO signal. Conventional relay-assisted FSO systems, however, are designed around two basic assumptions: relays are buffer-free, and relays are stationary. This article proposes to improve the performance of the existing relay-assisted FSO systems by relaxing both of these highly restrictive assumptions through the integration of UAVs as buffer-aided moving relays into the conventional relay-assisted FSO systems. Specifically, two possible simple integration scenarios are proposed and analyzed through simulation. The obtained simulation results demonstrate the great potential associated with the proposed highly promising, innovative, hybrid FSO architecture. Given that high performance gains are observed under small buffer sizes, it becomes conceivable to employ buffer-aided moving relaying UAVs to serve a variety of other purposes. This includes, for instance, having these UAVs oversee the operation of amateur drones for potential misbehavior or wrongdoing within the area of their deployment.

Abstract: As the realm of the community has grown increasingly important in the contemporary political economy, the theoretical debates surrounding community have also grown in importance and volume. Too often this literature has been either celebratory or dismissive; either romanticizing the concept and thereby elevating it to primary rank as the focal point of societal initiatives, or objecting to its regulated limits and contradictions and thereby dismissing its importance and political utility. There are important contributions being made by both those who dismiss community and those who celebrate it. But for those interested in understanding the potential for emancipatory social change in the contemporary political economy of neoliberalism there are also severe limitations imposed by these perspectives. After critiquing these literatures and debates, we put forward an understanding of community that is neither dismissive nor celebratory, but instead argues that communities need to be understood as simultaneously products of both their larger, and largely external, contexts, and the practices, organizations and relations that take place within them. Thus, communities, because of their central place in capitalist political economies, can be vital arenas for social change. But they are also arenas that are constrained in their capacities to host such efforts.

Abstract: Software metrics are computed for the purpose of evaluating certain characteristics of the software developed. A Fortran static source code analyzer, FORTRANAL, was developed to study 31 metrics, including a new hybrid metric introduced in this paper, and applied to a database of 255 programs, all of which were student assignments. Comparisons among these metrics are performed. Their cross-correlation confirms the internal consistency of some of these metrics which belong to the same class. To remedy the incompleteness of most of these metrics, the proposed metric incorporates context sensitivity to structural attributes extracted from a flow graph. It is also concluded that many volume metrics have similar performance while some control metrics surprisingly correlate well with typical volume metrics in the test samples used. A flexible class of hybrid metric can incorporate both volume and control attributes in assessing software complexity.
