TL;DR: A general recursive approach for image segmentation by extending Otsu's (1978) method, which segments the brightest homogeneous object from a given image at each recursion, leaving only the darkesthomogeneous object after the last recursion.
Abstract: In this correspondence, we present a general recursive approach for image segmentation by extending Otsu's (1978) method. The new approach has been implemented in the scope of document images, specifically real-life bank checks. This approach segments the brightest homogeneous object from a given image at each recursion, leaving only the darkest homogeneous object after the last recursion. The major steps of the new technique and the experimental results that illustrate the importance and the usefulness of the new approach for the specified class of document images of bank checks is presented.

TL;DR: An artificial neural network (ANN) based method is developed for achieving more accurate remaining useful life prediction of equipment subject to condition monitoring and is validated using real-world vibration monitoring data collected from pump bearings in the field.
Abstract: Accurate equipment remaining useful life prediction is critical to effective condition based maintenance for improving reliability and reducing overall maintenance cost. In this paper, an artificial neural network (ANN) based method is developed for achieving more accurate remaining useful life prediction of equipment subject to condition monitoring. The ANN model takes the age and multiple condition monitoring measurement values at the present and previous inspection points as the inputs, and the life percentage as the output. A function generalized from the Weibull failure rate function is used to fit each condition monitoring measurement series for a failure history, and the fitted measurement values are used to form the ANN training set so as to reduce the effects of the noise factors that are irrelevant to the equipment degradation. A validation mechanism is introduced in the ANN training process to improve the prediction performance of the ANN model. The proposed ANN method is validated using real-world vibration monitoring data collected from pump bearings in the field. A comparative study is performed between the proposed ANN method and an adapted version of a reported method, and the results demonstrate the advantage of the proposed method in achieving more accurate remaining useful life prediction.

TL;DR: In this paper, a virtual synchronous machine (VSM) is used to support dynamic frequency control in a diesel-hybrid autonomous power system, where self-tuning algorithms are used to continuously search for optimal parameters during the operation of the VSM in order to minimize the amplitude and rate of change of the frequency variations and the power flow through the ESS.
Abstract: This paper investigates the use of a virtual synchronous machine (VSM) to support dynamic frequency control in a diesel-hybrid autonomous power system. The proposed VSM entails controlling the grid-interface converter of an energy storage system (ESS) to emulate the inertial response and the damping power of a synchronous generator. In addition, self-tuning algorithms are used to continuously search for optimal parameters during the operation of the VSM in order to minimize the amplitude and rate of change of the frequency variations and the power flow through the ESS. The performances of the proposed self-tuning (ST)-VSM and the constant parameters (CP)-VSM were evaluated by comparing their inertial responses and their damping powers for different scenarios of load variations. For the simulated cases, the ST-VSM achieved a similar performance to that of the CP-VSM, while reducing the power flow through the ESS in up to 58%. Moreover, in all the simulated scenarios, the ST-VSM was found to be more efficient than the CP-VSM in attenuating frequency variations, i.e., it used less energy per Hertz reduced.

TL;DR: In this paper, a meta-analytic analysis of the relationship between the Barnean resource-based view (RBV) and the Penrosean theory is presented, showing that versatile resources are associated with higher levels of growth, whereas VRIN resources are not.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examine the following three questions: are women's leadership styles truly different from men's? Are these styles less likely to be effective? Is the determination of women's effectiveness as a leaders fact-based or a perception that has become a reality?
Abstract: The purpose of this article was to examine the following three questions: Are women’s leadership styles truly different from men’s? Are these styles less likely to be effective? Is the determination of women’s effectiveness as a leaders fact‐based or a perception that has become a reality? Conclusions revealed: Question one: Yes, women’s leadership style is, at this point, different from men’s but men can learn from and adopt “women’s” style and use it effectively as well In other words, effective leadership is not the exclusive domain of either gender and both can learn from the other Question two: No, women’s styles are not at all likely to be less effective; in fact, they are more effective within the context of team‐based, consensually driven organizational structures that are more prevalent in today’s world Question three: The assessment that a woman’s leadership style is less effective than a man’s is not fact‐based but rather driven, by socialization, to a perception that certainly persists The inescapable reality is that, within the senior ranks of corporate north America (and elsewhere), women remain conspicuous by their absence
