TL;DR: The validated methodology was finally applied to the analysis of a wide variety of cosmetics and household products and has been shown to comply with the current European Cosmetic Regulation, although the results obtained for some rinse-off cosmetics revealed high isothiazolinone content.

TL;DR: The content of minerals and antioxidant bioactive compounds, and for the first time bioaccessibility, were evaluated in broccoli, green curly kale, red mustard and radish hydroponic microgreens and overall, radish and mustard presented the highest bio accessibility ofBioactive compounds and minerals.
Abstract: Microgreens constitute an emerging class of fresh, healthy foods due to their nutritional composition In this study the content of minerals and antioxidant bioactive compounds, and for the first time bioaccessibility, were evaluated in broccoli (Brassica oleracea L var italica Plenck), green curly kale (Brassica oleracea var sabellica L), red mustard (Brassica juncea (L) Czern) and radish (Raphanus sativus L) hydroponic microgreens Macro- (K, Ca, Mg) and oligo-elements (Fe, Zn), ascorbic acid, total soluble polyphenols, total carotenoids, total anthocyanins, total isothiocyanates and total antioxidant capacity (Trolox Equivalent Antioxidant Capacity and Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) were determined before and after the standardized simulated gastrointestinal digestion process All microgreens provided relevant amounts of vitamin C (31–56 mg/100 g fresh weight) and total carotenoids (162–224 mg β-carotene/100 g dry weight) Mineral content was comparable to that normally found in hydroponic microgreens and the low potassium levels observed would allow their dietetic recommendation for patients with impaired kidney function Both total soluble polyphenols and total isothiocyanates were the greatest contributors to the total antioxidant capacity after digestion (43–70% and 31–63% bioaccessibility, respectively) while macroelements showed an important bioaccessibility (34–90%) In general, radish and mustard presented the highest bioaccessibility of bioactive compounds and minerals Overall, the four hydroponic Brassicaceae microgreens present a wide array of antioxidant bioactive compounds

TL;DR: The results demonstrate the influence of the N. caninum isolate on foetal death outcome, infection dynamics and immune responses in cattle.
Abstract: This work studies the influence of Neospora caninum intra-species diversity on abortion outcome, infection dynamics in terms of parasite dissemination and peripheral-local immune responses in pregnant cattle. Animals were intravenously inoculated at day 70 of pregnancy with 107 tachyzoites of two isolates showing marked differences in virulence in vitro and in pregnant mouse models: Nc-Spain7, a high virulence isolate, and Nc-Spain8, a low-to-moderate virulence isolate. After inoculation, pregnancy was monitored, and dams were culled when foetal death was detected. Foetal mortality occurred in all infected heifers between days 24 and 49 post-infection (pi), however, it was detected sooner in Nc-Spain7-infected animals (median day = 34) than those inoculated with Nc-Spain8 (median day = 41) with a trend towards significance (P < 0.11). Similar histological lesions were observed in placentomes and in most of the foetuses from the two infected groups. However, parasites were more frequently detected in the placenta and foetuses by PCR and in the foetal brain by immunohistochemistry in Nc-Spain7-infected animals. Specific antibodies were detected starting at day 13 post-infection in all infected cattle, with higher IgG levels in Nc-Spain7-infected group. IFN-γ and IL-4 profiles also varied between infected groups in PBMC stimulation assays. Infected animals showed significant increases in their cytokine mRNA levels (IFN-γ, IL-4, IL-10, IL-12p40 and TNF-α) in the caruncle at time of foetal death. Differences between the infected groups were also observed for cytokine profiles. These results demonstrate the influence of the N. caninum isolate on foetal death outcome, infection dynamics and immune responses in cattle.

TL;DR: In this paper, the most relevant analytical methods and applications for the extraction of selected emerging pollutants, including pharmaceuticals and veterinary drugs, personal care products, as well as industrial contaminants, in environmental matrices are presented.
Abstract: Microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) is a well-established automated green extraction technique, offering many advantages such as the combined reduction of the extraction time, solvent and energy consumptions, as well as the possibility of performing simultaneous multiple extractions, thus increasing the number of samples processed daily. This review provides a comprehensive description of the most relevant analytical methods and applications, proposed from year 2012, for the extraction of selected emerging pollutants, including pharmaceuticals and veterinary drugs, personal care products, as well as industrial contaminants, in environmental matrices. The novel developments and last technological trends such as the implementation of organic solvent-free extraction methods, the use of surfactants and ionic liquids, the combination with microextraction approaches or the introduction of systems that sequentially process the samples, are also addressed. Overall, MAE appears to be an excellent alternative for the determination of emerging organic pollutants, thereby enabling its application within the regulatory environmental field.

TL;DR: These results open new possibilities to genetically improve cold tolerance either with genome-wide selection or with marker assisted selection.
Abstract: Breeding for cold tolerance in maize promises to allow increasing growth area and production in temperate zones. The objective of this research was to conduct genome-wide association analyses (GWAS) in temperate maize inbred lines and to find strategies for pyramiding genes for cold tolerance. Two panels of 306 dent and 292 European flint maize inbred lines were evaluated per se and in testcrosses under cold and control conditions in a growth chamber. We recorded indirect measures for cold tolerance as the traits number of days from sowing to emergence, relative leaf chlorophyll content or quantum efficiency of photosystem II. Association mapping for identifying genes associated to cold tolerance in both panels was based on genotyping with 49,585 genome-wide single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers. We found 275 significant associations, most of them in the inbreds evaluated per se, in the flint panel, and under control conditions. A few candidate genes coincided between the current research and previous reports. A total of 47 flint inbreds harbored the favorable alleles for six significant quantitative trait loci (QTL) detected for inbreds per se evaluated under cold conditions, four of them had also the favorable alleles for the main QTL detected from the testcrosses. Only four dent inbreds (EZ47, F924, NK807 and PHJ40) harbored the favorable alleles for three main QTL detected from the evaluation of the dent inbreds per se under cold conditions. There were more QTL in the flint panel and most of the QTL were associated with days to emergence and ΦPSII. These results open new possibilities to genetically improve cold tolerance either with genome-wide selection or with marker assisted selection.
