TL;DR: In this article, the problem of natural convection in differentially heated vertical cavities filled with spherical particles saturated with Newtonian fluids is investigated numerically, where the Brinkman-Darcy-Ergun equation is used as the momentum equation and the wall effect on porosity variation is approximated by an exponential function.
Abstract: The problem of natural convection in differentially heated vertical cavities filled with spherical particles saturated with Newtonian fluids is investigated numerically. The Brinkman-Darcy-Ergun equation is used as the momentum equation, and the wall effect on porosity variation is approximated by an exponential function. The effect of variable stagnant thermal conductivities is taken into consideration in the energy equation. The formulation of the problem shows that the flow and heat transfer characteristics depend on six dimensionless parameters, namely, the Rayleigh and Prandtl numbers of the fluid phase, the dimensionless particle diameter, the conductivity ratio of the two phases, the bulk porosity, and the aspect ratio of the cavity. The influences of these parameters on the heat transfer rate are thoroughly investigated. The predicted Nusselt numbers are compared with existing experimental results. It is found that the computed Nusselt numbers based on the present model compare the best with experimental data.

TL;DR: In this article, Olive mill wastewaters were electrolyzed at platinized expanded titanium electrodes in a modified Grignard reactor divided into two cylindrical compartments separated by a cation-exchange membrane.
Abstract: Olive mill wastewaters (OMW) characterized by their dark brown colour and their very high content of phenolic compounds constitute an environmental concern, particularly in Mediterranean countries where the production of olive oil is important. In this investigation, OMW were electrolyzed at platinized expanded titanium electrodes in a modified Grignard reactor divided into two cylindrical compartments separated by a cation-exchange membrane. Results show better than 90% decolourization and nearly 85% removal of phenols, as established by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry, at high current intensity. This process can easily be monitored by cyclic voltammetry at a boron-doped diamond electrode. A significant reduction of chemical oxygen demand and total organic carbon was observed. The electrodes are not passivated and the ohmic potential drop is very low. Electrochemical oxidation in a modified Grignard reactor is a promising process for the destruction of phenolic compounds present in OMW.

02 Aug 2002TL;DR: A methodology for finding the empirical distribution of the Rand’s measure of association when the two partitions only differ by chance is proposed and the distributions of the 3 indices are bimodal.
Abstract: We propose a methodology for finding the empirical distribution of the Rand’s measure of association when the two partitions only differ by chance. For that purpose we simulate data coming from a latent profile model and we partition them according to 2 groups of variables. We also study two other indices: the first is based on an adaptation of Mac Nemar’s test, the second being Jaccard’s index. Surprisingly, the distributions of the 3 indices are bimodal.

TL;DR: High genetic diversity of K. pneumoniae populations was observed, with specific characteristics at each center, and four clonal groups (CG) or complexes (CC) prevailed among 229 Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates.
Abstract: The international project MOSAR was conducted in five rehabilitation centers; patients were screened for rectal carriage of extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing members of the Enterobacteriaceae. Among 229 Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates, four clonal groups (CG) or complexes (CC) prevailed: CG17 in France, CG101 in Italy, CG15 in Spain, and CC147 in Israel. ESBLs, mainly CTX-Ms, were produced by 226 isolates; three isolates expressed AmpC-like cephalosporinases. High genetic diversity of K. pneumoniae populations was observed, with specific characteristics at each center.
