Abstract: In this paper, we present a collaborative game designed for Sifteo Cubes, a new tangible interface for multiplayer games. We discuss how this game exploits the platform's interface to transfer some of the game mechanics into the non-digital world, and how this approach affects both the player's experience and the design process. We present the technical limitations encountered during game development and analyze video recordings of play sessions with regard to the play strategies developed by the players. Then, we identify two properties that this game shares with many other games on tangible platforms and discuss how these properties influence both the game design process and the player experience. We advocate that these properties provide players with more freedom and relatedness, while helping to create an easy-to-learn and customizable gameplay, despite their own design limitations.

Abstract: The fine structure constant α has a particular status in physics. Its precise determination is required to test the quantum electrodynamics (QED) theory. The constant α is also a keystone for the determination of other fundamental physical constants, especially the ones involved in the framework of the future International System of units. This paper presents Paris experiment, where the fine structure constant is determined by measuring the recoil velocity of a rubidium atom when it absorbs a photon. The impact of the recent improvement of QED calculations of the electron moment anomaly and the recent measurement of the cesium atom recoil at Berkeley will be discussed. The opportunity to provide a precise value of the ratio h/mu between the Planck constant and the atomic mass constant will be investigated.

Abstract: Background Recent trends of pneumococcal colonization in the United States, following the introduction of conjugate vaccination, indicate that non-vaccine serotypes tend to replace vaccine serotypes. The eventual extent of this replacement is however unknown and depends on serotype-specific carriage and transmission characteristics.

Abstract: To avoid failures in the marketplace, the control of the risks in product innovation and the reduction of the innovation cycles require fast and valid assessments from customers. An interactive genetic algorithm (IGA) is proposed for eliciting users' perceptions about the shape of a product, in order to stimulate creativity and to identify design trends. Interactive users' assessment tests are conducted on virtual products to capture and analyze users' responses. The IGA is interfaced with Computer Aided Design (CAD) software (CATIA V5) to create sets of parameterized designs in real time, which are presented iteratively by a graphical interface to the users for evaluation. After a description of the IGA, a study on the convergence of the IGA is presented. The convergence varies, according to the tuning parameters of the algorithm and the size of the design problem. An experiment was carried out with a set of 45 users on the application case, a dashboard, put forward by Renault. The implementation of the perceptive tests and the analysis of the results are described using hierarchical ascendant classification (HAC) and multivariate analysis. This paper shows how the results of tests using IGA can be used to elicit user perception and to detect design trends.

Abstract: A simple competing risk distribution as a possible alternative to the Weibull distribution in lifetime analysis is proposed. This distribution corresponds to the minimum between exponential and Weibull distributions. Our motivation is to take account of both accidental and aging failures in lifetime data analysis. First, the main characteristics of this distribution are presented. Then, the estimation of its parameters are considered through maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference. In particular, the existence of a unique consistent root of the likelihood equations is proved. Decision tests to choose between an exponential, Weibull and this competing risk distribution are presented. And this alternative model is compared to the Weibull model from numerical experiments on both real and simulated data sets, especially in an industrial context.
