Abstract: The concept of 'ant mosaics' has been established to describe the structure of arboreal ant communities in plantations and other relatively simple forest systems. It is essentially built upon the existence of negative and positive associations between ant species plus the concept of dominance hierarchies. Whether this concept can be applied to ant communities in more complex mature tropical rain forests has been questioned by some authors. Here we demonstrate that some previous attempts to prove or disprove the existence of such ant mosaics sampled by knockdown insecticide canopy fogging in near pristine tropical forests may have been thwarted by poor statistical power and too coarse spatial resolution, and the conclusions may be highly dependent on ant species and forest stratum selected for the study. Moreover, the presence or absence of ant mosaics may be driven by the density of suitable resources. We use an intensively studied ant community in the lowland rainforests of North-East Queensland, Australia to outline processes that may lead to ant mosaic patterns, reasoning that competition for highly predictable resources in space and time such as honeydew and nectar is a fundamental process to maintain the mosaic structure. Honeydew and nectar sources, particularly their amino acids, are of crucial importance for nourishment of arboreal ant species. We use canopy fogging data from the same site in Australia and from two mature rainforests in South-East Asia to compare spatial avoidance and co-occurrence patterns implied by ant mosaics. Significant negative and positive associations were found among the three most abundant ant species in each dataset. Several problems with such spatial analyses are discussed, and we suggest that studies of ant mosaics in complex rainforest communities would benefit from a more focused approach on patterns of resource distribution and their differential utilisation by ants.

Abstract: Post-logging changes in catchment sediment yield have traditionally been attributed to increases in hillslope erosion and delivery rates as a result of forest harvesting activities. Linking hillslope erosion to catchment yield in forestry environments remains difficult, however, primarily because of the scarcity of data on the nature of hillslope sediment storage and delivery processes. A large rainfall simulator (350 m2) was used to apply rainstorms to a logged hillslope containing a snig track (skid trail) and a general logging or harvesting area (GHA) on 10 forest compartments in south-eastern Australia. The experiments confirmed that the compacted, disturbed surfaces, such as roads and tracks, are the dominant sources of sediment in forestry areas. Sediment transport rates were limited by available sediment supply on both the snig track and the GHA, introducing important implications for the modelling of these surfaces using sediment transport capacity theories. Sediment delivery from the snig track to the adjacent GHA, via a cross-bank (drainage diversion), was strongly influenced by the percentage fine fraction in the eroded sediment. Preferential deposition of coarse aggregates was measured at erosion control structures and on the adjacent GHA. Over 50% of fine-grained material were deposited on the hillslope over a relatively short, flow path length of <5 m, highlighting the effectiveness of runoff diversion as a practice in reducing sediment flux. The transfer of water and sediment from disturbed to less disturbed parts of the landscape, and the associated potential for sediment storage, needs to be considered as part of any catchment impact assessment. Abstract: Tasmania is a natural laboratory for investigating the evolutionary processes of the Quaternary. It is a large island lying 40-44 degrees S, which was repeatedly glaciated and linked to southeastern continental Australia during the Quaternary. Climate change promoted both the isolation of species in glacial refugia, and an exchange between Tasmanian and mainland floras. Eucalyptus is a complex and diverse genus, which has increased in abundance in Australia over the past 100 kyr, probably in response to higher fire frequency. Morphological evidence suggests that gene flow may have occurred between many eucalypt species after changes in their distribution during the Quaternary. This paper summarizes recent genetic evidence for migration and introgressive hybridization in Tasmanian Eucalyptus. Maternally inherited chloroplast DNA reveals a long-term persistence of eucalypts in southeastern Tasmanian refugia, coupled with introgressive hybridization involving many species. Detailed analysis of the widespread species Eucalyptus globulus suggests that migration from mainland Australia was followed by introgression involving a rare Tasmanian endemic. The data support the hypothesis that changes in distribution of interfertile species during the Quaternary have promoted reticulate evolution in Eucalyptus.

Abstract: The compatibilizing effect of poly(hexamethylene oxide) (PHMO) on the syn- thesis of polyurethanes based on a,v-bis(6-hydroxyethoxypropyl) poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) was investigated. The hard segments of the polyurethanes were based on 4,49- methylenediphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) and 1,4-butanediol. The effects of the PDMS/ PHMO composition, method of polyurethane synthesis, hard segment weight percentage, catalyst, and molecular weight of the PDMS on polyurethane synthesis, properties, and morphology were investigated using size exclusion chromatography, tensile testing, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The large difference in the solubility parameters between PDMS and conventional reagents used in polyurethane synthesis was found to be the main problem associated with preparing PDMS-based polyurethanes with good me- chanical properties. Incorporation of a polyether macrodiol such as PHMO improved the compatibility and yielded polyurethanes with significantly improved mechanical properties and processability. The optimum PDMS/PHMO composition was 80 : 20 (w/w), which yielded a polyurethane with properties comparable to those of the commercial material Pellethane™ 2363-80A. The one-step polymerization was sensitive to the hard segment weight percentage of the polyurethane and was limited to materials with about a 40 wt % hard segment; higher concentrations yielded materials with poor mechanical properties. A catalyst was essential for the one-step process and tetracoordinated tin catalysts (e.g., dibutyltin dilaurate) were the most effective. Two-step bulk polymerization overcame most of the problems associated with reactant immiscibility by the end capping of the macrodiol and required no catalysts. The DSC results demonstrated that in cases where poor prop- erties were observed, the corresponding polyurethanes were highly phase separated and the hard segments formed were generally longer than the average expected length based on the reactant stoichiometry. Based on these results, we postulated that at low levels (; 20 wt %) the soft segment component derived from PHMO macrodiol was concentrated mainly in the interfacial regions, strengthening the adhesion between hard and soft domains of PDMS-based polyurethanes. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
