Abstract: Recent developments in polymer microstructured optical fibres allow for the realisation of microstructures in fibres that would be problematic to fabricate using glass-based capillary stacking. We present one class of such structures, where the holes lie on circular rings. A fibre of this type is fabricated and shown to be single moded for relatively long lengths of fibre, whereas shorter lengths are multimoded. An average index model for these fibres is developed. Comparison of its predictions to the calculated properties of the exact structure indicates that the ring structures emulate homogeneous rings of lower refractive index resulting in the ring structured fibres behaving approximately as cylindrically layered fibres.

Abstract: [1] We compare estimates of coastal and global averaged sea level for 1950 to 2000. During the 1990s and around 1970, we find coastal sea level is rising faster than the global average but that it rises slower than the global average during the late 1970s and late 1980s. The differences are largely a result of sampling the time-varying geographical distribution of sea level rise along a coastline which is more convoluted in some regions than others. More rapid coastal rise corresponds to La Nina–like conditions in the tropical Pacific Ocean and a slower rate corresponds to El Nino–like conditions. Over the 51 year period, there is no significant difference in the rates of coastal and global averaged sea level rise, as found in climate model simulations of the 20th century. The best estimate of both global average and coastal sea level rise remains 1.8 ± 0.3 mm yr−1, as found in earlier studies.

Abstract: In recent years biochar has been demonstrated to be a useful amendment to sequester carbon and reduce greenhouse gas emission from the soil to the atmosphere. Hence it can help to mitigate global environment change. Some studies have shown that biochar addition to agricultural soils increases crop production. The mechanisms involved are: increased soil aeration and water-holding capacity, enhanced microbial activity and plant nutrient status in soil, and alteration of some important soil chemical properties. This review provides an in-depth consideration of the production, characterization and agricultural use of different biochars. Biochar is a complex organic material and its characteristics vary with production conditions and the feedstock used. The agronomic benefits of biochar solely depend upon the use of particular types of biochar with proper field application rate under appropriate soil types and conditions. © 2016 Society of Chemical Industry.
