Abstract: Metarhizium anisopliae isolates from several insect hosts and from various sugar cane growing areas of Queensland, Australia, were examined for genetic diversity using random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers. Thirty isolates of M. anisopliae var. anisopliae and one isolate of M. anisopliae var. majus were examined. Ten randomly chosen 10mer or 11mer primers were used and RAPD banding patterns were compared. Thirty distinct genotypes could be distinguished amongst the 31 isolates tested on the basis of RAPD patterns. Six of the isolates classified as M. anisopliae var. anisopliae exhibited closer similarity to the M. anisopliae var. majus isolate than to other anisopliae strains tested. Isolates exhibiting similar (> 80% similarity) RAPD profiles tended to be isolated from the same geographic area and evidence for the persistence of particular fungal genotypes in specific geographical localities was obtained. Pathogenicity assays suggested that, in some instances, RAPD groupings may also indicate insect host range. The mean similarity amongst isolates measured by band sharing in all pairwise comparisons was 41% and the most distinct pair of isolates shared only 9% of their RAPD bands. We conclude that the isolates tested belonging to the species M. anisopliae, as assessed on morphological grounds, represent a very diverse genetic group. The results also suggest that RAPD markers may be useful for the tracking of specific biocontrol strains in the field.

Abstract: This paper reviews the major issues that impact upon the development of improved fodder species for saline environments across temperate Australia. It describes past and present research that has been, or is being, undertaken towards improvements in salt tolerance in forage species within Australia in relation to the principal regions where salinity occurs. It includes a discussion on the mechanisms of salt tolerance in plants. An extensive list of known or potential salt-tolerant fodder species is provided and the key opportunities for advancement within each of the 4 major forage groups: grasses, legumes, herbs and shrubs are discussed. Constraints to developing new salt and waterlogging tolerant fodder species are identified. A number of recommendations are made for research that should ensure that Australian producers have access to a new array of productive fodder species suited to saline environments.

Abstract: In woody species, potential mechanisms to compensate for tissue loss to herbivory and diseases have been related to post-event shifts in growth, biomass and internal resource allocation patterns, as modulated by external resource limitations. We examined the interactive effects of belowground resource limitations by varying nutrient and water availability, and aboveground carbon limitation imposed by a single defoliation event (40% leaf removal) on stem growth, whole-tree and within-tree resource allocation patterns (total non-structural carbohydrate and nitrogen) and below- and aboveground biomass allocation patterns in 8-month-old, field-grown Eucalyptus globulus Labill. saplings. Two months after treatments were imposed, the direction of the stem growth response to defoliation depended on the abiotic treatment. Five months after defoliation, however, we found little evidence that resource availability constrained the expression of tolerance to defoliation. With the exception of the combined low-nutrient and low-water supply treatment, saplings grown with (1) adequate water and nutrient supplies and even with (2) low-water supply or (3) low-nutrient supply were able to compensate for the 40% foliage loss. Abstract: The Carrington Event of 1859 is considered to be among the largest space weather events of the last 150 years. We show that only one out of 14 well-resolved ice core records from Greenland and Antarctica has a nitrate spike dated to 1859. No sharp spikes are observed in the Antarctic cores studied here. In Greenland numerous spikes are observed in the 40 years surrounding 1859, but where other chemistry was measured, all large spikes have the unequivocal signal, including co-located spikes in ammonium, formate, black carbon and vanillic acid, of biomass burning plumes. It seems certain that most spikes in an earlier core, including that claimed for 1859, are also due to biomass burning plumes, and not to solar energetic particle (SEP) events. We conclude that an event as large as the Carrington Event did not leave an observable, widespread imprint in nitrate in polar ice. Nitrate spikes cannot be used to derive the statistics of SEPs.
