Abstract: A total of 120 minimally processed, cut and packaged lettuce samples were purchased from retail supermarkets or provided by a salad production facility over an 8-month period. The samples were tested for total aerobic plate counts and for the presence of potentially pathogenic species belonging to the genera of Listeria, Aeromonas and Yersinia. The aerobic plate counts ranged from 103 to 109 colony forming units (cfu) g-1. Most samples (76%) contained between 105 and 107 cfu g-1 total aerobic bacteria. Listeria monocytogenes was isolated from three samples, Aeromonas hydrophila or Aeromonas caviae from 66 samples, and Yersinia enterocolitica from 71 samples. The pathogenic potential of Y. enterocolitica isolates was determined by screening for an array of biochemical, serological and genetic traits (heat-stable enterotoxin gene, the attachment and invasion gene locus, the invasin gene locus and the virulence plasmid). The Y. enterocolitica isolates lacked many of the phenotypic and genetic markers associated with virulence in primary pathogenic strains. As the roles of the reputed virulence factors of Aeromonas spp. in human infection are uncertain, the pathogenic potential of the Aeromonas isolates in lettuce remains unclear.

Abstract: Many authors (including this one) have suggested that the problem of synthesizing a grating from its reflection spectrum is significantly more difficult than the direct problem of obtaining the spectrum from the grating. Fortunately, this view is mistaken. One can synthesize a grating from any reflection spectrum by direct solution of the standard coupled-mode equations while simultaneously evaluating a simple integral to obtain the grating strength. This approach has the advantage of being based on a well-understood set of equations, making it amenable to physical interpretation, mathematical approximation, and generalization.

Abstract: The aim of this study is to holistically synthesise the extent and range of literature relating to the employment of individuals with autism spectrum disorder. Database searches of Medline, CINAHL, PsychINFO, Scopus, ERIC, Web of Science and EMBASE were conducted. Studies describing adults with autism spectrum disorder employed in competitive, supported or sheltered employment were included. Content analysis was used to identify the strengths and abilities in the workplace of employees with autism spectrum disorder. Finally, meaningful concepts relating to employment interventions were extracted and linked to the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health Core Sets for autism spectrum disorder. The search identified 134 studies for inclusion with methodological quality ranging from limited to strong. Of these studies, only 36 evaluated employment interventions that were coded and linked to the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health, primarily focusing on modifying autism spectrum disorder characteristics for improved job performance, with little consideration of the impact of contextual factors on work participation. The International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health Core Sets for autism spectrum disorder are a useful tool in holistically examining the employment literature for individuals with autism spectrum disorder. This review highlighted the key role that environmental factors play as barriers and facilitators in the employment of people with autism spectrum disorder and the critical need for interventions which target contextual factors if employment outcomes are to be improved.

Abstract: Temperature profiles of flames were measured using arrays of thermocouples on towers located in experimental bushfires of varying intensity, carried out in dry eucalypt forest of different fuel age and structure. In-fire video of flame-front passage and time series data from very fine exposed thermocouples were used to estimate the duration of passage of the main flaming front in these experimental fires. Flame temperature measured at points within the flame was found to vary with height; maximum flame temperature was greater in the tall shrub fuel than in the low shrub fuel sites. A model to estimate flame temperature at any height within a flame of a specific height was developed. The maximum flame temperature observed was ~1100°C near the flame base and, when observation height was normalised by flame height, flame temperature exponentially decreased to the visible flame tip where temperatures were ~300°C. Maximum flame temperature was significantly correlated with rate of spread, fire intensity, flame height and surface fuel bulk density. Average flame-front residence time for eucalypt forest fuels was 37 s and did not vary significantly with fine fuel moisture, fuel quantity or bulk density.
