Abstract: We propose and demonstrate a novel hybrid Brillouin/erbium fiber laser that uses both Brillouin gain in single-mode optical fiber and gain in erbium-doped fiber. The lasing frequency was accurately determined by the Brillouin shift in single-mode optical fiber and was 10.35 GHz from the Brillouin pump. Large powers could be extracted because of incorporation of erbium-doped fiber in the laser resonator. An output power of 10 mW was measured at a wavelength of 1532 nm.

Abstract: This paper describes a new motion estimation algorithm that is potentially useful for both computer vision and video compression applications. It is hierarchical in structure, using a separable two-dimensional (2-D) discrete wavelet transform (DWT) on each frame to efficiently construct a multiresolution pyramid of subimages. The DWT is based on a complex-valued pair of four-tap FIR filters with Gabor-like characteristics. The resulting complex DWT (CDWT) effectively implements an analysis by an ensemble of Gabor-like filters with a variety of orientations and scales. The phase difference between the subband coefficients of each frame at a given subpel bears a predictable relation to a local translation in the region of the reference frame subtended by that subpel. That relation is used to estimate the displacement field at the coarsest scale of the multiresolution pyramid. Each estimate is accompanied by a directional confidence measure in the form of the parameters of a quadratic matching surface. The initial estimate field is progressively refined by a coarse-to fine strategy in which finer scale information is appropriately incorporated at each stage. The accuracy, efficiency, and robustness of the new algorithm are demonstrated in comparison testing against hierarchical implementations of intensity gradient-based and fractional-precision block matching motion estimators.

Abstract: CD8α+ dendritic cells (DCs) have been shown to be the principal DC subset involved in priming MHC class I-restricted CTL immunity to a variety of cytolytic viruses, including HSV type 1, influenza, and vaccinia virus. Whether priming of CTLs by CD8α+ DCs is limited to cytolytic viruses, which may provide dead cellular material for this DC subset, or whether these DCs selectively present intracellular Ags, is unknown. To address this question, we examined Ag presentation to a noncytolytic virus, lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus, and to an intracellular bacterium, Listeria monocytogenes. We show that regardless of the type of intracellular infection, CD8α+ DCs are the principal DC subset that initiate CD8+ T cell immunity.

Abstract: Summary Simulation models of net mineralization of nitrogen (N) in soil need to be able to incorporate the effect of soil water. Our objective was to identify and define the best way of expressing soil water and its effect on net mineralization across a range of soil types. We collated data from 12 laboratory incubation studies, including a total of 33 different soils, where rates of net mineralization of N were determined from the net accumulation of mineral N under a range of water contents at near-optimal temperatures. Measurements of water potential and limits of water content observed in the field were available for most of these soils. The percentage of pore space filled with water was estimated from measurements of soil bulk density. We found that relative water content, particularly when expressed relative to an upper and lower limit of water content observed in the field, was the best descriptor for net mineralization. The next best descriptions were soil water potential, water content relative to the optimal water content for mineralization, and percentage of pore space filled with water, with water content alone being poor. Although various functions may be used to describe the relation between relative water content and net mineralization of N, an equation for a sigmoidal curve provided the best fit, and explained 78% of the variation.

Abstract: Bacterial biofilms are associated with secondary gold grains from two sites in Australia. 16S ribosomal DNA clones of the genus Ralstonia that bear 99% similarity to the bacterium Ralstonia metallidurans-shown to precipitate gold from aqueous gold(III) tetrachloride-were present on all DNA-positive gold grains but were not detected in the surrounding soils. These results provide evidence for the bacterial contribution to the authigenic formation of secondary bacterioform gold grains and nuggets.
