TL;DR: The plant extract showed a significant hypoglycemic as well as erythropoetic effects in the diabetic animals, justifying its use traditionally in the management of diabetes mellitus.
Abstract: The study investigated the anti-diabetic and haematological effects of n-butanol fraction of Alchornea cordifolia in streptozotocin-induced diabetic wistar rats In this work, thirty six adult strain of albino wistar rats were used, which included six normal, diabetic untreated and twenty four diabetic treated rats Diabetes mellitus was induced by single intraperitoneally injection of 60 mg/kg body weight dose of streptozotocin dissolved in 01 ml fresh cold citrate buffer pH 45 into 16 h-fasted rats Diabetic rats were randomly divided as follows: Group I served as normal control, Group II served as diabetic untreated rats, while Group III to Group VI received 200, 400 and 800mg/kg b w of the extract and glibenclamide 10mg/kg b w respectively by orally by gavages for a period of 28 days The animals were weighed weekly to determine the change in body weight Fasting blood glucose was measured after every seven days After the last day of treatment, blood samples were collected from the animals from each group on the 29 th day by cardiac puncture in 16 hours fasted animals for the determination of haematological parameters The results obtained in this present study showed that the blood glucose level was significantly (p<005) decreased in the animals administered with 200mg/kg b w of the extract, with a higher decrease (p < 001) observed in the group that received 400 and 800mg/kg b w extract respectively when compared to the diabetic control group However, there was a significantly increased (p<005) body weight of diabetic animals that received all doses of the extract after 14 th , 21 st and 28 th day when compared to diabetic control group There was a statistically significant increase (p<005) in packed cell volume, red cell count, haemoglobin concentration and total protein in the extract treated diabetic animals The total white blood cell count and lymphocyte revealed a significantly (p<005) increased the levels after treatment with the extract after 28 th days In conclusion, the plant extract showed a significant hypoglycemic as well as erythropoetic effects in the diabetic animals, justifying its use traditionally in the management of diabetes mellitus

TL;DR: Hyperglycaemia at the time of arterial occlusion or pre-existing hypertension impaired the dynamic recruitment of cortical collaterals after pMCAO, and the impairment of collateral recruitment may contribute to the detrimental effects these comorbidities have on stroke outcome.
Abstract: Acute hyperglycaemia and chronic hypertension worsen stroke outcome but their impact on collateral perfusion, a determinant of penumbral life span, is poorly understood. Laser-speckle contrast imag...

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors analyzed the temperature variations in Calabar, Southern Nigeria for 20 years (1998-2018) using the Mann-Kendall trend test and Sen's slope estimator.
Abstract: Studies have been made to understand the fluctuations of temperature in regions around the world because of an ever changing variation due mostly to man's anthropogenic activities. This study is focused on analysing the temperature variations in Calabar, Southern Nigeria for 20 years (1998 – 2018) using the Mann-Kendall trend test and Sen's slope estimator. Results from the Mann-Kendall test shows that the annual trends of the maximum and average ambient temperature are both increasing after showing positive Kendall Z-values (1.04 and 0.10 respectively). The minimum ambient temperature annual trend was observed to be decreasing after having a negative Kendall Z-value (-0.32); the estimations from Sen's slope agreed with these results. The p-values were calculated to be 0.745, 0.299, and 0.922 for the minimum, maximum, and average ambient temperature trend respectively; these values were all found to be less than all significant levels used 0.1% (0.001), 1% (0.01), 5% (0.05), and 10% (0.1). This shows that the trends were not increasing or decreasing significantly, hence there is "no significant trend". This may be due to the almost unchanging weather condition in the region arising from its closeness to the Atlantic Ocean.

TL;DR: The authors examines the different faces of war in Nigeria and literary responses to them and concludes that the liberative undertone of every/any war must never be abused and/or compromised for selfish purposes or unattainable goals.
Abstract: In the Nigerian context, every mention of war (as a word in the Nigerian past or present) automatically takes one back to the Nigerian-Biafran Civil War (1967-1970). While reference to this war is an integral part of this study, this paper examines the different faces of war in Nigeria and literary responses to them. Beyond armed conflict, gender positionings and configurations, political manipulations and intrigues, corruption issues, economic, ethnic and religious-inspired uprisings are wars Nigeria has been, and is still, contending with. From the novels of Chinua Achebe, Elechi Amadi, Chukwuemeka Ike, Isidore Okpewho, Festus Iyayi, Femi Osofisan, Okey Ndibe, Flora Nwapa, Buchi Emecheta, Abubakar Gimba, Tanure Ojaide, Afam Belolisa, Kaine Agary; to the poetry of Wole Soyinka, J. P. Clark, Mabel Segun, Pol Ndu, Peter Onwudinjo, Joe Ushie, Catherine Acholonu, Cecilia Kato, Ibiwari Ikiriko, Sophia Obi; to the drama of J. P. Clark, Wole Soyinka, Ola Rotimi, Arnold Udoka, among others, it is evident that these wars have provided impetus to the Nigerian literary artists. These writers have examined the different facets, phases, implications and prospects of these wars. The underlying lesson, in all, is that the liberative undertone of every/any war must never be abused and/or compromised for selfish purposes or unattainable goals.

TL;DR: The authors examines the continuous presence of the military as a motif in the Nigerian novel and concludes that civil rule should left for civil authority while the military should remain within its orbit of protecting the territorial integrity off the nation.
Abstract: This paper examines the continuous presence of the military as a motif in the Nigerian novel. It examines the paradigm shift from the older generation of Nigerian novelists who saw the military as corrective mechanism to the younger generation of Nigerian novelist who hold that the military is the bane of the decay that has come to envelop the modern Nigerian society. It is the position of this paper that ideologically, the military cannot be seen as a corrective mechanism. This is because it is responsible for the corruption religious malaise, academic rot and human right abuses among other observations that have bedeviled the Nigerian society. These among others are the issues which this paper has set out to discuss. Finally, the paper concludes the civil rule should left for civil authority while the military should remain within its orbit of protecting the territorial integrity off the nation.
