TL;DR: Nigeria is rich in both conventional and renewable energy resources that empower the country with a large capacity to develop an effective national energy policy as discussed by the authors The study aims at reviewing the current energy resource structure of Nigeria in terms of production and utilization, comparing sectoral performance and reviewing issues confronting energy growth, sustainability, policies and frameworks towards the actualization of energy effiency.
Abstract: Nigeria is rich in both conventional and renewable energy resources that empower the country with a large capacity to develop an effective national energy policy The study aims at reviewing the current energy resource structure of Nigeria in terms of production and utilization, comparing sectoral performance and reviewing issues confronting energy growth, sustainability, policies and frameworks towards the actualization of energy effi- ciency The total energy consumption in 2011 was 288 million tons of oil equivalent about 54 % of the world value in 2010 Nigeria share of world CO2 emissions in 2011 was 032 % and a drop of 002 % in 2010 In addressing the country's challenges of energy demand, production, consumption and related environmental prob- lems, the government has initiated sustainable and effec- tive energy conservation strategies to improve efficiency These include: reduction of energy consumption at the household sector, reduction of gas flaring, adoption and maximum renewable energy technologies, reduction of energy intensity in industries by appropriate energy con- servation and management system In addition, the policies also include the development and integration of alternative energy resources such as nuclear, biomass, wind and solar into the total energy mix structure For all these to be accomplished, the energy development strategy must fol- low a sustainable framework to balance economic growth, social expansion and eco-friendly protection

TL;DR: This study provides the first evidence that kolaviron could act as an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor and may be developed as a herbal-based natural product with therapeutic potential in the management of neurodegenerative disorders associated with disturbed cholinergic neurotransmitter systems.
Abstract: Background: Kolaviron, isolated from seeds of Garcinia kola, have been shown to possess wide pharmacological properties. Purpose: The present study examined the effect of kolaviron on acetylcholinesterase activities in the hippocampus and striatum of adult Wistar rats. Methods: In this study, histological and histochemical methods were used to investigate the effects of kolaviron on the histology of the hippocampus and striatum and on acetylcholinesterase activities in these brain regions. Results: We showed that kolaviron produced no neurodegenerative changes in the hippocampus and striatum. Kolaviron did not significantly alter neuronal density in these brain regions. Kolaviron significantly reduced acetylcholinesterase staining intensity, suggesting a likely inhibiting effect on this enzyme. Conclusion: To the best of our knowledge, this study provides the first evidence that kolaviron could act as an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor. Kolaviron may be developed as a herbal-based natural product with therapeutic potential in the management of neurodegenerative disorders associated with disturbed cholinergic neurotransmitter systems. doi : 10.5214/ans.0972.7531.200203 Competing interests: None; Source of funding: None; Received Date: 6 March 2013; Revised Date: 29 March 2013; Accepted Date: 22 April 2013

TL;DR: Compromised behavior and brain histomorphology following Ni exposures is associated with increase in oxidative stress, suggesting that environmental and occupational exposures to Ni are potential risk factors for neurological symptoms in humans.
Abstract: Nickel (Ni) is a heavy metal with wide industrial uses. Environmental and occupational exposures to Ni are potential risk factors for neurological symptoms in humans. The present study investigated the behavior and histomorphological alterations in brain of rats sub-acutely exposed to nickel chloride (NiCl2) and the possible involvement of oxidative stress. Rats were administered with 5, 10 or 20 mg/kg NiCl2 via intraperitoneal injections for 21 days. Neurobehavioral assessment was performed using the Y-maze and open field test (OFT). Histomorphological analyses of brain tissues, as well as biochemical determination of oxidative stress levels were performed. Results showed that Ni treatments significantly reduced body weight and food intake. Cognitive and motor behaviors on the Y-maze and OFT, respectively, were compromised following Ni treatments. Administration of Ni affected neuronal morphology in the brain and significantly reduced percentage of intact neurons in both hippocampus and striatum....

TL;DR: Thermodynamic parameters obtained imply that Dexamethasone is adsorbed on the steel surface by a physiochemical process and obeys Langmuir adsorption isotherm, and sensitivity analysis shows that time and inhibitor concentration were the most important input variable while other input variables could not be neglected.
Abstract: In this research, the effect of Dexamethasone drug (DM) on mild steel corrosion in 2 M HCl was analyzed using weight loss, potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and MD-simulation. In addition, Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and atomic force microscopy (AFM) were employed to inspect the mild steel surface in the blank and inhibited medium. For the optimization tool, adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) model was developed to predict the inhibition efficiency. The experimental data was categorized into two different sections for training and testing the ANFIS model. The developed model aimed to evaluate the fitness between the experimental and predicted values. From the results generated, optimum value (IE%) of DM was recorded as 80%, 81% and 83% at concentration of 0.4 g/L for weight loss, EIS and PDP respectively. Potentiodynamic polarization results reveal that Dexamethasone functions as a mixed-type inhibitor, whereas studies of EIS show that the inhibition mechanism is by the transfer of charges. Mild steel surface examination confirmed the presence of a protective adsorbed film on the mild steel surface. Thermodynamic parameters obtained imply that Dexamethasone is adsorbed on the steel surface by a physiochemical process and obeys Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Also the MD-simulation results evidenced that DM forms a metallic surface adsorbed film on the steel surface. From the ANFIS model, the sensitivity analysis shows that time and inhibitor concentration were the most important input variable while other input variables could not be neglected. ANFIS model coefficient of determination (R2 0.993) was found between the observed and predicted values. ANFIS model gave optimum prediction (80%) with high degree accuracy and robustness. The outcomes of this investigation provide more information, simulation, and prediction about inhibition of metal corrosion.
