TL;DR: A rigorous method for estimating some of the calibration parameters in airborne laser scanning (ALS), namely the three bore-sight angles and the range-finder offset, which is shown to be not only accurate but also very robust in terms of convergence.
Abstract: We present a rigorous method for estimating some of the calibration parameters in airborne laser scanning (ALS), namely the three bore-sight angles and the range-finder offset. The technique is based on expressing the system calibration parameters within the direct-georeferencing equation separately for each target point, and conditioning a group of points to lie on a common surface of a known form such as a plane. However, the assumed a priori information about q chosen planar features is only their form not the spatial orientation or position. Thus, the 4·q plane parameters are estimated together with the calibration parameters in a combined adjustment model that makes use of GPS/INS-derived position and orientation as well as LiDAR range and encoder angle as observations. To make the approach practical when working with voluminous ALS and GPS/INS data, the contribution of each laser point to the normal equations is formed sequentially. The discussions focus on practical examples with data from a continuously-rotating scanner that reveal the conditions under which almost complete de-correlation between the estimated parameters occurs. In such a case, all bore-sight angles are determined with accuracy that is several times superior to the system noise level. Given sufficiently strong geometry, the presented method is shown to be not only accurate but also very robust in terms of convergence. When appropriate, the method is applicable for calibration of additional systematic effects such as laser-beam encoder offsets or scale factor with minimal modification to the functional model.

07 May 2009TL;DR: In this paper, a soft design science approach is proposed to improve human organizations through the activities of design, development, instantiation, evaluation and evolution of a technological artifact, which merges the common design science research process and the iterative soft systems methodology.
Abstract: This paper proposes and evaluates a soft systems approach to design science research. Soft Design Science provides an approach to the development of new ways to improve human organizations, especially with consideration for social aspects, through the activities of design, development, instantiation, evaluation and evolution of a technological artifact. The Soft Design Science approach merges the common design science research process (design, build-artifact, evaluation) together with the iterative soft systems methodology. The design-build artifact-evaluation process is iterated until the specific requirements are met. The generalized requirements are adjusted as the process continues to keep alignment with the specific requirements. In the end, the artifact represents a general solution to a class of problems shown to operate in one instance of that class of problems. The proposed methodology is evaluated by an analysis of how it differs from, and could have informed and improved, a published design science study, which used a design-oriented action research method.

TL;DR: This paper found that stronger attachment to traditional culture was associated with enhanced outcomes across a range of socio-economic indicators, suggesting that traditional culture should be viewed as a part of the solution to Indigenous disadvantage in Australia, and not as part of a problem.
Abstract: A recurring theme in Indigenous affairs in Australia is a tension between maintenance of Indigenous culture and achievement of socio-economic ‘equity’: essentially ‘self-determination’ versus ‘assimilation’. Implicit in this tension is the view that attachment to traditional cultures and lifestyles is a hindrance to achieving ‘mainstream’ economic goals. Using data from the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Survey, stronger attachment to traditional culture is found to be associated with enhanced outcomes across a range of socio-economic indicators. This suggests Indigenous culture should be viewed a part of the solution to Indigenous disadvantage in Australia, and not as part of the problem.

TL;DR: This paper presents a novel framework that asset owners can use to ensure that they can obtain ‘value’ from investing in BIM and views the benefits realization process should be viewed as a learning process that enables the asset owner to constantly question and measure the benefits of BIM.

TL;DR: The mechanism of skin delivery across the stratum corneum and via hair follicles is reviewed and the composition and characterization of ME and NE for topical and transdermal delivery is focused on.
Abstract: Nanosystems such as microemulsions (ME) and nanoemulsions (NE) offer considerable opportunities for targeted drug delivery to and via the skin. ME and NE are stable colloidal systems composed of oil and water, stabilised by a mixture of surfactants and cosurfactants, that have received particular interest as topical skin delivery systems. There is considerable scope to manipulate the formulation components and characteristics to achieve optimal bioavailability and minimal skin irritancy. This includes the incorporation of established chemical penetration enhancers to fluidize the stratum corneum lipid bilayers, thus reducing the primary skin barrier and increasing permeation. This review discusses nanosystems with utility in skin delivery and focuses on the composition and characterization of ME and NE for topical and transdermal delivery. The mechanism of skin delivery across the stratum corneum and via hair follicles is reviewed with particular focus on the influence of formulation.
