Abstract: Abstract The deep learning (DL) revolution is touching all scientific disciplines and corners of our lives as a means of harnessing the power of big data. Marine ecology is no exception. New methods provide analysis of data from sensors, cameras, and acoustic recorders, even in real time, in ways that are reproducible and rapid. Off-the-shelf algorithms find, count, and classify species from digital images or video and detect cryptic patterns in noisy data. These endeavours require collaboration across ecological and data science disciplines, which can be challenging to initiate. To promote the use of DL towards ecosystem-based management of the sea, this paper aims to bridge the gap between marine ecologists and computer scientists. We provide insight into popular DL approaches for ecological data analysis, focusing on supervised learning techniques with deep neural networks, and illustrate challenges and opportunities through established and emerging applications of DL to marine ecology. We present case studies on plankton, fish, marine mammals, pollution, and nutrient cycling that involve object detection, classification, tracking, and segmentation of visualized data. We conclude with a broad outlook of the field’s opportunities and challenges, including potential technological advances and issues with managing complex data sets.

TL;DR: In this paper , single crystal Li[Ni 0.5 Mn 0.3 Co 0.2 ]O 2 //graphite (NMC532) cells with only sufficient graphite for operation to 3.80 V were cycled with charging to either 3.65 V or 3.8 V.
Abstract: Single crystal Li[Ni 0.5 Mn 0.3 Co 0.2 ]O 2 //graphite (NMC532) pouch cells with only sufficient graphite for operation to 3.80 V (rather than ≥4.2 V) were cycled with charging to either 3.65 V or 3.80 V to facilitate comparison with LiFePO 4 //graphite (LFP) pouch cells on the grounds of similar maximum charging potential and similar negative electrode utilization. The NMC532 cells, when constructed with only sufficient graphite to be charged to 3.80 V, have an energy density that exceeds that of the LFP cells and a cycle-life that greatly exceeds that of the LFP cells at 40 °C, 55 °C and 70 °C. Excellent lifetime at high temperature is demonstrated with electrolytes that contain lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (LiFSI) salt, well beyond those provided by conventional LiPF 6 electrolytes. Ultra-high precision coulometry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy are used to complement cycling results and investigate the reasons for the improved performance of the NMC cells. NMC cells, particularly those balanced and charged to 3.8 V, show better coulombic efficiency, less capacity fade and higher energy density compared to LFP cells and are projected to yield lifetimes approaching a century at 25 °C.

TL;DR: In this paper, the microstructure and mechanical properties of high-entropy carbide ceramics could be adjusted by the carbon content, which is conducive to improving hardness and toughness, as well as reducing grain size.
Abstract: High-entropy (Ti0.2Zr0.2Nb0.2Ta0.2Mo0.2)Cx ceramics, with different carbon contents (x=0.55−1), were prepared by spark plasma sintering using powders synthesized via a carbothermal reduction approach. Single-phase, high-entropy (Ti0.2Zr0.2Nb0.2Ta0.2Mo0.2)Cx ceramics could be obtained when using a carbon content of x=0.70−0.85. Combined ZrO2 and Mo-rich carbide phases, or residual graphite, existed in the ceramics due to either a carbon deficiency or excess at x=0.55 and 1, respectively. With the carbon content increased from x=0.70 to x=0.85, the grain size decreased from 4.36 ± 1.55 μm to 2.00 ± 0.91 μm, while the hardness and toughness increased from 23.72 ± 0.26 GPa and 1.69 ± 0.21 MPa·m1/2 to 25.45 ± 0.59 GPa and 2.37 ± 0.17 MPa·m1/2, respectively. This study showed that the microstructure and mechanical properties of high-entropy carbide ceramics could be adjusted by the carbon content. High carbon content is conducive to improving hardness and toughness, as well as reducing grain size.

TL;DR: In this paper , the authors conducted exploratory surveys on the perception of telecommuting and food e-commerce and found that while tele-commuting has the potential to increase social wellbeing and the social sustainability of both urban and rural Canadian communities through a variety of mechanisms, food ecommerce does not offer similar returns.
Abstract: • The COVID-19 pandemic led to widespread telecommuting among Canadians. • Telecommuting and food purchasing patterns have changed, influencing social welfare as a facet of social sustainability. • Telecommuting can increase social wellbeing of communities, online food delivery less so. • Online food purchasing may create food insecurity for disadvantaged Canadians. Telecommuting has become a dominant professional experience for many Canadian business and workers due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Telecommuting has several benefits that are separate from COVID-19. Two prevalent changes have been in regard to telecommuting and online food buying habits, both of which impact social wellbeing as a dimension of social sustainability. We discuss two exploratory surveys on the perception of telecommuting and food e-commerce. We found that while telecommuting has the potential to increase social wellbeing and the social sustainability of both urban and rural Canadian communities through a variety of mechanisms, food e-commerce does not offer similar returns. Instead, the prevalence of food e-commerce merely adds convenience to the lives of those who already have adequate food access while maintaining the status quo, or even worsening access for disadvantaged Canadians.

TL;DR: This work demonstrates the application of a rapid pre-concentration protocol and a magnetic bead-based RNA extraction method for the detection of SARS-CoV-2 RNA from raw wastewater without the need for extensive sample treatment.
Abstract: In this work, a rapid and simplified method for extracting SARS-CoV-2 RNA from whole wastewater using a magnetic beads-based protocol is presented. The described method involves the centrifugation of a 50-mL aliquot of raw wastewater influent for 5 min to obtain a 500-μL pellet, which is eluted with 2 mL of a Tween®20-based elution buffer; 1 mL of the elute is extracted for RNA using a direct magnetic bead-based extraction method. RNA recovery was examined in several bench-scale experiments using heat-inactivated SARS-CoV-2 (HI-SCV-2) spiked into raw wastewater to assess the effects of different solids pellet : buffer ratios, inhibition mitigation strategies, and varying levels of total suspended solids. When the method was assessed using an influent wastewater sample known to contain SARS-CoV-2, the viral signal was detected in all five biological replicates, whereas direct extraction of 1-mL aliquots of the raw wastewater resulted in a 40% viral detection rate. The experimental method limit of detection (MLOD) using HI-SCV-2 spiked into raw wastewater was 50 GU mL−1 with a 95% limit of detection. Using the described protocol, the presence of SARS-CoV-2 RNA was verified in wastewater collected from wastewater treatment facilities (WWTFs) in Atlantic Canada over a period of 15 weeks during the rise and fall of a COVID-19 outbreak. This method is effective and rapid and could provide potential application for laboratories with limited resources. Of approximately 50 methods that have been developed for measuring SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater referenced in the literature, this is the first to advance a robust magnetic beads-based RNA extraction technique from whole wastewater without extensive sample pre-treatment. The novel application of this method in the rapid extraction of SARS-CoV-2 RNA from municipal wastewater is an indispensable tool to potentially understand COVID-19 infection occurrence within communities.

TL;DR: In this article , the impact of competitive graphite materials on NMC811 pouch cell performance using UHPC, isothermal microcalorimetry, and in-situ stack growth was examined.
Abstract: Part II of this 2-part series examines the impact of competitive graphite materials on NMC811 pouch cell performance using Ultra-High Precision Coulometry (UHPC), isothermal microcalorimetry, and in-situ stack growth. A simple lifetime projection of the best NMC811/graphite cells as a function of operating temperature is made. We show that graphite choice greatly impacts fractional fade, while fractional charge endpoint capacity slippage was largely unchanged due to identical cathodes. We show that an increase in graphite 1st cycle efficiency due to limited redox-active sites—favourable for minimizing Li inventory loss—is concomitant with an increase in negative electrode charge transfer resistance. Further, we demonstrate that cells with competitive artificial graphites (AG) have a lower parasitic heat flow (∼0.060 mW A −1 h −1 at 40 o C) compared to cells with natural graphites (NG), and that the cells with the AGs had minimal stack thickness change with cycling. Finally, we model SEI growth for NMC811 cells limited to 4.06 V with the square-root time model, and project that the best NMC811/graphite cells here can have decades-long lifetimes at 20 –30 °C when Li plating is avoided. Such cells are excellent candidates for grid storage applications where energy density is less important compared to long lifetime.

TL;DR: In this paper , a CT calibration phantom was designed containing posts with nominal microsphere concentrations of 0.5 mg/mL, 5.0 mg/dL, and 25.0mg/mL for yttrium-90 radioembolization.
Abstract: To perform precision dosimetry in yttrium-90 radioembolization through CT imaging of radiopaque microspheres in a rabbit liver model and to compare extracted dose metrics to those produced from conventional PET-based dosimetry.A CT calibration phantom was designed containing posts with nominal microsphere concentrations of 0.5 mg/mL, 5.0 mg/mL, and 25.0 mg/mL. The mean Hounsfield unit was extracted from the post volumes to generate a calibration curve to relate Hounsfield units to microsphere concentration. A nominal bolus of 40 mg of microspheres was administered to the livers of eight rabbits, followed by PET/CT imaging. A CT-based activity distribution was calculated through the application of the calibration curve to the CT liver volume. Post-treatment dosimetry was performed through the convolution of yttrium-90 dose-voxel kernels and the PET- and CT-based cumulated activity distributions. The mean dose to the liver in PET- and CT-based dose distributions was compared through linear regression, ANOVA, and Bland-Altman analysis.A linear least-squares fit to the average Hounsfield unit and microsphere concentration data from the calibration phantom confirmed a strong correlation (r2 > 0.999) with a slope of 14.13 HU/mg/mL. A poor correlation was found between the mean dose derived from CT and PET (r2 = 0.374), while the ANOVA analysis revealed statistically significant differences (p < 10-12) between the MIRD-derived mean dose and the PET- and CT-derived mean dose. Bland-Altman analysis predicted an offset of 15.0 Gy between the mean dose in CT and PET. The dose within the liver was shown to be more heterogeneous in CT than in PET with an average coefficient of variation equal to 1.99 and 1.02, respectively. The benefits of a CT-based approach to post-treatment dosimetry in yttrium-90 radioembolization include improved visualization of the dose distribution, reduced partial volume effects, a better representation of dose heterogeneity, and the mitigation of respiratory motion effects. Post-treatment CT imaging of radiopaque microspheres in yttrium-90 radioembolization provides the means to perform precision dosimetry and extract accurate dose metrics used to refine the understanding of the dose-response relationship, which could ultimately improve future patient outcomes.

TL;DR: In this paper, a full set of explosion parameters for the pure materials and their flow-improved mixtures was determined in accordance with ASTM standards, including minimum ignition temperature, minimum explosible concentration, and maximum explosion pressure were independent of powder flow properties.
Abstract: Coating of nanoscale flow aids is widely used in pharmaceutical applications to increase the flowability of cohesive powders. For combustible pharmaceutical active ingredients and excipients, it is unclear whether increased flowability affects the dust explosion hazard. In this work, acetaminophen (APAP) and microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) were studied with and without a coating of silica nanoparticles. A full set of explosion parameters for the pure materials and their flow-improved mixtures was determined in accordance with ASTM standards. The results show that parameters including minimum ignition temperature, minimum explosible concentration, and maximum explosion pressure were independent of powder flow properties, while the presence of flow aids led to significantly lower minimum ignition energy values for both APAP and MCC, and a slightly higher maximum rate of pressure rise for APAP. The connection between dust flowability and the dust explosion hazard is discussed with respect to these experimental results.
