TL;DR: An overview of cathode and anode materials for sodium-ion batteries, and a comprehensive summary of research on cathodes for magnesium ion batteries are provided in this article. And several common experimental discrepancies in the literature are addressed, noting the additional constraints placed on magnesium electrochemistry.
Abstract: The need for economical and sustainable energy storage drives battery research today. While Li-ion batteries are the most mature technology, scalable electrochemical energy storage applications benefit from reductions in cost and improved safety. Sodium- and magnesium-ion batteries are two technologies that may prove to be viable alternatives. Both metals are cheaper and more abundant than Li, and have better safety characteristics, while divalent magnesium has the added bonus of passing twice as much charge per atom. On the other hand, both are still emerging fields of research with challenges to overcome. For example, electrodes incorporating Na+ are often pulverized under the repeated strain of shuttling the relatively large ion, while insertion and transport of Mg2+ is often kinetically slow, which stems from larger electrostatic forces. This review provides an overview of cathode and anode materials for sodium-ion batteries, and a comprehensive summary of research on cathodes for magnesium-ion batteries. In addition, several common experimental discrepancies in the literature are addressed, noting the additional constraints placed on magnesium electrochemistry. Lastly, promising strategies for future study are highlighted.

TL;DR: The improved photoeletrocatalytic activity of the TiO 2/Cu2O composite array electrode is attributed to the synergistic effect of Cu2O nanoparticles and TiO2 nanotube arrays.
Abstract: Differently sized Cu2O nanoparticles have been assembled photocatalytically on the surface of self-organized highly oriented TiO2 nanotubes obtained by anodization of a Ti sheet in fluoride-containing electrolytes. X-ray diffraction analysis identifies an anatase structure and fine preferential orientation of (101) planes. The UV-vis absorption edge of the TiO2 nanotube arrays shift to lower energy after Cu2O loading. The composite array electrode exhibits a higher photovoltage response than the TiO2 powders directly deposited on a Ti sheet. The highest photoconversion efficiencies observed for the Cu2O-loaded electrode are 17.2% and 0.82% under UV light and visible light irradiation, respectively. Especially, the composite array electrode shows a higher efficiency than the nonloaded one for the photoelectrocatalytic decomposition of 4-chlorophenol. The improved photoeletrocatalytic activity of the TiO2/Cu2O composite array electrode is attributed to the synergistic effect of Cu2O nanoparticles and TiO2 nanotube arrays. The Cu2O nanoparticles could enhance the efficiency of photon harvesting and reduce the chances of electron-hole recombination by sending the electrons to the conduction band of TiO2 nanotubes. The accumulated electrons in the conduction band of TiO2 nanotubes would reduce oxygen to form peroxides for enhanced advanced oxidation. The byproducts were identified by high-performance liquid chromatography.

TL;DR: A novel natural drying (ND) strategy for low-cost and simple fabrication of graphene aerogels (GAs) suggests promising applications in soft actuators, soft robots, sensors, deformable electronic devices, drug release, thermal insulator, and protective materials.
Abstract: A novel natural drying (ND) strategy for low-cost and simple fabrication of graphene aerogels (GAs) is highlighted. The as-formed NDGAs exhibit ultralarge reversible compressibility (99%) and tunable Poisson's ratio behaviors (-0.30 < ν < 0.46), which suggests promising applications in soft actuators, soft robots, sensors, deformable electronic devices, drug release, thermal insulator, and protective materials.

TL;DR: A review of the recent progress of counter electrode (CE) catalysts involving Pt, carbon materials, inorganic materials, multiple compounds, polymers, and composites is presented in this article.
Abstract: To realize long-term developments and practical application of the dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) requires a robust increase of the power conversion efficiency (PCE) and a significant decrease of the production cost. Fortunately, a new record PCE value of 12.3% was achieved by using cobalt-based redox couples combined with organic dye. Evidently, dye design is the key path to improve the PCE, while developing low cost counter electrode (CE) catalysts is one of the promising paths to reduce the production cost of DSCs by replacing the expensive Pt CE. In this article, we review the recent progress of CE catalysts involving Pt, carbon materials, inorganic materials, multiple compounds, polymers, and composites. We discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each catalyst and put forward ideas for designing new CE catalysts in future research for DSCs and other application fields.
