Abstract: The cyanine platforms including cyanine, hemicyanine, and squaraine are good candidates for developing chemosensors because of their excellent photophysical properties, outstanding biocompatibility, and low toxicity to living systems. A huge amount of research work involving chemosensors based on the cyanine platforms has emerged in recent years. This review focuses on the development from 2000 to 2015, in which cyanine, hemicyanine, and squaraine sensors will be separately summarized. In each section, a systematization according to the type of detection mechanism is established. The basic principles about the design of the chemosensors and their applications as bioimaging agents are clearly discussed. In addition, we emphasize the advances that have been made in improving the detection performance through incorporation of the chemosensors into nanoparticles.

Abstract: This tutorial review presents some recent developments in the construction and applications of cassettes based on resonance energy transfer between fluorescent dyes in the visible and infrared region. We focused on the contributions of different connections between the energy donor and acceptor according to the “through-space” and “through-bond” methods, and emphasised their applications in ratiometric sensing for the detection of ions and small molecules.

Abstract: In this paper, we propose a visual saliency detection algorithm from the perspective of reconstruction errors. The image boundaries are first extracted via super pixels as likely cues for background templates, from which dense and sparse appearance models are constructed. For each image region, we first compute dense and sparse reconstruction errors. Second, the reconstruction errors are propagated based on the contexts obtained from K-means clustering. Third, pixel-level saliency is computed by an integration of multi-scale reconstruction errors and refined by an object-biased Gaussian model. We apply the Bayes formula to integrate saliency measures based on dense and sparse reconstruction errors. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm performs favorably against seventeen state-of-the-art methods in terms of precision and recall. In addition, the proposed algorithm is demonstrated to be more effective in highlighting salient objects uniformly and robust to background noise.

Abstract: In the present work, we intend to demonstrate how to do topology optimization in an explicit and geometrical way. To this end, a new computational framework for structural topology optimization based on the concept of moving morphable components is proposed. Unlike in the traditional solution frameworks, where topology optimization is achieved by eliminating unnecessary materials from the design domain or evolving the structural boundaries, optimal structural topology is obtained by optimizing the layout of morphable structural components in the proposed approach. One of the advantages of the proposed approach, which may have great potential in engineering applications, is that it can integrate the size, shape, and topology optimization in CAD modeling systems seamlessly. The approach can combine both the advantages of explicit and implicit geometry descriptions for topology optimization. It also has the great potential to reduce the computational burden associated with topology optimization substantially.
