TL;DR: 1,3-Propanediol was produced by Klebsiella pneumoniae using crude glycerol obtained from biodiesel production and it could be concluded that the crude Glycerol could be directly converted to 1, 3-PD without any prior purification
Abstract: 1,3-Propanediol (1,3-PD) was produced by Klebsiella pneumoniae using crude glycerol obtained from biodiesel production. The 1,3-PD concentration of 51.3 g/l−1 on crude glycerol from alkali-catalyzed methanolysis of soybean oil was comparable to that of 53 g/l−1 on crude glycerol derived from a lipase-catalyzed process. The productivities of 1.7 g l−1 h−1 on crude glycerol were comparable to that of 2 g l−1 h−1 on pure glycerol. It could be concluded that the crude glycerol could be directly converted to 1,3-PD without any prior purification.

TL;DR: In this paper, different kinds of sensing techniques, including change of light intensity, interferometry, fiber Bragg grating, adsorption measurement and distributed sensing, are briefly reviewed to introduce the basic sensing principles.
Abstract: Optical fiber sensor (OFS) technologies have developed rapidly over the last few decades, and various types of OFS have found practical applications in the field of civil engineering. In this paper, which is resulting from the work of the RILEM technical committee “Optical fiber sensors for civil engineering applications”, different kinds of sensing techniques, including change of light intensity, interferometry, fiber Bragg grating, adsorption measurement and distributed sensing, are briefly reviewed to introduce the basic sensing principles. Then, the applications of OFS in highway structures, building structures, geotechnical structures, pipelines as well as cables monitoring are described, with focus on sensor design, installation technique and sensor performance. It is believed that the State-of-the-Art review is helpful to engineers considering the use of OFS in their projects, and can facilitate the wider application of OFS technologies in construction industry.

08 Sep 2018TL;DR: A cross-modal projection matching (CMPM) loss and a cross- modal projection classification (CMPC) loss for learning discriminative image-text embeddings are proposed and extensive analysis and experiments demonstrate the superiority of the proposed approach.
Abstract: The key point of image-text matching is how to accurately measure the similarity between visual and textual inputs. Despite the great progress of associating the deep cross-modal embeddings with the bi-directional ranking loss, developing the strategies for mining useful triplets and selecting appropriate margins remains a challenge in real applications. In this paper, we propose a cross-modal projection matching (CMPM) loss and a cross-modal projection classification (CMPC) loss for learning discriminative image-text embeddings. The CMPM loss minimizes the KL divergence between the projection compatibility distributions and the normalized matching distributions defined with all the positive and negative samples in a mini-batch. The CMPC loss attempts to categorize the vector projection of representations from one modality onto another with the improved norm-softmax loss, for further enhancing the feature compactness of each class. Extensive analysis and experiments on multiple datasets demonstrate the superiority of the proposed approach.

TL;DR: A microfluidic-based method for encapsulating single cells in a ~6 micron layer of alginate that increases the proportion of cell-containing microgels by 10-fold, with encapsulation efficiencies over 90%.
Abstract: Existing techniques to encapsulate cells into microscale hydrogels generally yield high polymer-to-cell ratios and lack control over the hydrogel's mechanical properties. Here, we report a microfluidic-based method for encapsulating single cells in an approximately six-micrometre layer of alginate that increases the proportion of cell-containing microgels by a factor of ten, with encapsulation efficiencies over 90%. We show that in vitro cell viability was maintained over a three-day period, that the microgels are mechanically tractable, and that, for microscale cell assemblages of encapsulated marrow stromal cells cultured in microwells, osteogenic differentiation of encapsulated cells depends on gel stiffness and cell density. We also show that intravenous injection of singly encapsulated marrow stromal cells into mice delays clearance kinetics and sustains donor-derived soluble factors in vivo. The encapsulation of single cells in tunable hydrogels should find use in a variety of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine applications.
