TL;DR: The primary value of the theory is that it provides not only a computational model of intellectual growth, but also concrete and constructive explanations of where one may find insightful inspirations for transformative scientific discoveries.
Abstract: We propose an explanatory and computational theory of transformative discoveries in science. The theory is derived from a recurring theme found in a diverse range of scientific change, scientific discovery, and knowledge diffusion theories in philosophy of science, sociology of science, social network analysis, and information science. The theory extends the concept of structural holes from social networks to a broader range of associative networks found in science studies, especially including networks that reflect underlying intellectual structures such as co-citation networks and collaboration networks. The central premise is that connecting otherwise disparate patches of knowledge is a valuable mechanism of creative thinking in general and transformative scientific discovery in particular.

TL;DR: The analysis shows that graphene nucleation near a metal step edge is superior to that on a terrace, and the use of graphene seeds to synthesize high-quality graphene in large area is proposed.
Abstract: The nucleation of graphene on a transition metal (TM) surface, either on a terrace or near a step edge, is systematically explored using density functional theory (DFT) calculations and applying the two-dimensional (2D) crystal nucleation theory. Careful optimization of the supported carbon clusters, CN (with size N ranging from 1 to 24), on the Ni(111) surface indicates a ground state structure transformation from a one-dimensional (1D) C chain to a two-dimensional (2D) sp2 C network at N ~ 10-12. Furthermore, the crucial parameters controlling graphene growth on the metal surface, nucleation barrier, nucleus size, and the nucleation rate on a terrace or near a step edge, are calculated. In agreement with numerous experimental observations, our analysis shows that graphene nucleation near a metal step edge is superior to that on a terrace. Based on our analysis, we propose the use of seeded graphene to synthesize high-quality graphene in large area.

TL;DR: In this paper, single-atom catalysts (SACs) with individual and isolated metal atoms anchored to supports can act as active centers, and the power of SACs is highlighted and the most recent advances are summarized.
Abstract: Single-atom catalysts (SACs) with individual and isolated metal atoms anchored to supports can act as active centers. Single-atom catalysis is powerful and attractive because SACs have demonstrated distinguishing performances, such as drastic cost-reduction, notable catalytic activity, and selectivity. Herein, we firstly introduce SAC, including the concept and some key issues in synthesis and catalysis. Then, the power of single-atom catalysis is highlighted and the most recent advances are summarized. It is very encouraging that in recent years our understanding of SACs has increased, owing to substantial studies regarding sample preparation, characterization, evaluation, and also mechanistic interpretation. On the other hand, great challenges still remain for SACs.
