Abstract: Emotion processing has been demonstrated to have a strong impact on somatic symptom perception. In the current quasi-experimental trial associations between the application of emotion regulation strategies and symptom-related outcomes were examined in subjects with medically unexplained physical symptoms (MUS; n = 48) and in mentally healthy individuals (n = 48). Somatic symptoms were repeatedly induced four times in both samples. After each symptom induction, participants were instructed to apply another of four emotion regulation strategies. Symptom-related outcomes were rated before and after a strategy was applied. Hierarchical linear models showed that in the MUS group cognitive reappraisal was significantly and acceptance was marginally associated with lower symptom annoyance scores compared with compassionate self-support. In healthy subjects distraction was associated with better mood scores compared with compassionate self-support. Future research should examine the effects of acceptance and cognitive reappraisal strategies applied by MUS subjects over a longer period of time.

Abstract: In this paper we apply an extended Landau-Lifschitz equation, as introduced by Baňas et al. for the simulation of heat-assisted magnetic recording. This equation has similarities with the Landau-Lifshitz-Bloch equation. The Baňas equation is supposed to be used in a continuum setting with sub-grain discretization by the finite-element method. Thus, local geometric features and nonuniform magnetic states during switching are taken into account. We implement the Baňas model and test its capability for predicting the recording performance in a realistic recording scenario. By performing recording simulations on 100 media slabs with randomized granular structure and consecutive read back calculation, the write position shift and transition jitter for bit lengths of 10nm, 12nm, and 20nm are calculated.

Abstract: It is expected that there is only a single active path between an IEEE 1588 master and slave. This is based on the general operation scenario of an Ethernet network, which depends on a setup without network loops. In a redundant Ethernet system based on the Parallel Redundancy Protocol (PRP) or the High availability Seamless Redundancy protocol (HSR), this expectation is skewed. There are two simultaneously active paths between an IEEE 1588 master and slave clock in these systems. Selecting the better path for synchronization, by applying additional qualification criteria in the best master clock algorithm, e.g., the correction field, is a common solution for this problem. This paper proposes a solution to use both paths simultaneously for synchronization to provide a seamless switchover, if one path fails.

Abstract: We live in a period of heightened internationalisation of population movement for work, education, and varied forms of forced and voluntary migration. Recognition of qualifications earned by the individuals concerned is a key practical, social, and psychological issue for themselves, as well as impacting on prospective employers, host communities and nations, and a variety of political and cultural debates. This paper analyses the education and qualification system in Austria, a longstanding recipient country for migration, and develops a theoretical framework for classifying institutional procedures that can recognise foreign degrees and the results of both non-formal and informal learning. It argues that both technocratic objectives and moral claims for a quick (or centralised) simplification of these procedures are unrealistic but identifies complementary measures to improve the situation incrementally.
