Abstract: The goal of this paper is to propose a methodology comprising a range of visualization techniques to analyze the interactions between government and citizens on the issues of public concern taking place on Twitter, mainly through the official government or ministry accounts. The methodology addresses: 1) the level of government activity in different countries and sectors; 2) the topics that are addressed through such activities; 3) the resources shared between government and citizens as part of interactions; 4) the intensity of citizen response to government announcements; 5) the sentiment expressed by citizens when providing such responses; and 6) the combinations of such issues. Example combinations include identifying topics that generated the largest Twitter activity by government but received the least interest from citizens, identifying topics that generated the most polarized reactions from citizens, or determining correlation between policy announcements and trust, fear and other negative emotions expressed by citizens. The methodology uses visual analytics to reveal patterns and trends associated with various questions, complemented with sentiment analysis to study government-citizen interactions on Twitter. The methodology is validated by examining Twitter presence in five sectors --- health, social development, education, environment and work, in five Latin American countries with mature e-Participation capabilities --- Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Uruguay.

Abstract: As transmitters of biological information, extracellular vesicles (EVs) are crucial for the maintenance of physiological homeostasis, but also contribute to pathological conditions, such as thrombotic disorders. The ability of EVs to support thrombin generation has been linked to their exposure of phosphatidylserine, an anionic phospholipid that is normally restricted to the inner leaflet of the plasma membrane but exposed on the outer leaflet during EV biogenesis. Here, we investigated whether EVs of different cellular origin and from different settings, namely platelets and red blood cells from blood bank units and a monocyte-like cell line (THP-1), differ regarding their potential to support factor XII-dependent thrombin generation. EVs were isolated from blood products or THP-1 cell culture supernatants using differential centrifugation and characterized by a combination of flow cytometry, nanoparticle tracking analysis, and Western blotting. Soluble factors co-enriched during the isolation of EVs were depleted from blood-cell derived EV fractions using size exclusion chromatography, while proteins bound to the surface of EVs were degraded by mild protease treatment. We found that platelet-derived and red blood cell-derived EVs supported factor XII-dependent thrombin generation to comparable extents, while monocytic EVs failed to support thrombin generation when added to EV-depleted human plasma. We excluded a major contribution of co-enriched soluble proteins or of proteins bound to the EV surface to the thrombogenicity of blood cell-derived EVs. Our data suggest that the enhanced potential of blood cell-derived EVs to support thrombin generation is rather due to enhanced exposure of phosphatidylserine on the surface of blood cell-derived EVs. Extending these investigations to EVs from other cell types, such as mesenchymal stromal cells, will be crucial for their future therapeutic applications.

Abstract: The visualization and analysis of dynamic social networks are challenging problems, demanding the simultaneous consideration of relational and temporal aspects. In order to follow the evolution of a network over time, we need to detect not only which nodes and which links change and when these changes occur, but also the impact they have on their neighbourhood and on the overall relational structure. Aiming to enhance the perception of structural changes at both the micro and the macro level, we introduce the change centrality metric. This novel metric, as well as a set of further metrics we derive from it, enable the pair wise comparison of subsequent states of an evolving network in a discrete-time domain. Demonstrating their exploitation to enrich visualizations, we show how these change metrics support the visual analysis of network dynamics.

Abstract: This review summarizes the potential for polypill therapies for stroke prevention. While a number of studies applying different approaches regarding polypill have been performed, none of them has had a focus on stroke as the main outcome. A combination pill containing drugs such as statins, diuretics, and other antihypertensives is currently available in various formats. Estimates focusing mostly on primary prevention show that using such a combination drug a reduction in the 5-year stroke incidence by 50% can be achieved - especially in low- and middle-income countries with a high prevalence of risk factors even among people at young ages. A combination of a large supporting population-wide program with a registry-based quality control is the most likely perspective and can be achieved within a reasonable time frame and potentially have significant influence in young stroke populations.
