TL;DR: The chromia scale was mostly fine-grained, but also contained numerous abnormally large single crystals growing out of the scale surface as discussed by the authors, which can be supported by gas phase transport of CrO3, but not by lattice diffusion.

17 Mar 2004TL;DR: In this article, an article of aluminum alloy is shaped at normal temperatures and then an organic halogen-carbon compound, or a matrix containing such a compound, is applied to the surface, which is then heated up to at least 700[deg]C so that the halogen combines with the aluminum and the organic components evaporate.
Abstract: Articles of aluminum alloy are shaped at normal temperatures and then have an organic halogen-carbon compound, or a matrix containing such a compound, applied to the surface. The article is then heated up to at least 700[deg]C so that the halogen combines with the aluminum and the organic components evaporate. Heating can take place when the article is in use for the first time. An independent claim is also included for the use of this process to improve the oxidation resistance of aluminum alloys, especially titanium-aluminum alloys. Application of organic halogen compounds can be by brush, spraying or dipping to produce between 3.5X10->12 and 6.5X10->4 mol fluorine/cm2>.

TL;DR: In this article, the scaling of an Fe-20Cr alloy was studied in H2-H2O-H 2S mixtures between 973 and 1223 K. The reaction followed a mixed rate law between linear and parabolic, indicating that the reaction rate at the scale-gas interface was comparable with the diffusion rate in the scale.
Abstract: The scaling of an Fe-20Cr alloy has been studied in H2-H2O-H2S mixtures between 973 and 1223 K. According to a simplified phase diagram, Cr2O3 and FeS should be the thermodynamically stable compounds in the gas mixtures chosen. The reaction followed a mixed rate law between linear and parabolic, indicating that the reaction rate at the scale-gas interface was comparable with the diffusion rate in the scale. At a constant H2/H2S ratio the scaling rate initially decreased slightly with increasing water-vapor pressure. A further increase of the water-vapor pressure resulted in localized sulfide formation, while the other parts of the surface were covered with a Cr2O3 film. Only Cr2O3 formed above a critical water-vapor content. Three zones could be distinguished when a sulfide scale is formed. The outer zone consisted of practically pure FeS; the intermediate zone was a solid solution of (Fe,Cr)S, partially decomposed to FeCr2S4 and metal during cooling; and the inner zone contained small Cr2O3 inclusions in an (Fe,Cr)S matrix.

TL;DR: In this paper, the influence of the platinum content on the cyclic oxidation resistance at 1150°C of Pt-aluminide coatings deposited on a single crystal Ni-based superalloy is reported.
Abstract: In this paper, the influence of the platinum content on the cyclic oxidation resistance at 1150°C of Pt-aluminide coatings deposited on a single crystal Ni-based superalloy is reported. The different coatings involve the well-known bi-phase (Ni,Pt)Al and PtAl2 as well as single phase (Ni,Pt)Al coatings with various compositions and microstructures. The results showed that the cyclic oxidation performance depends strongly on the average Pt-content present in the coating and, to a lesser extent, on the coating microstructure. Moreover, no relevant effect of the Al content could be evidenced. Surface deformation occurred during exposure and was attributed to phase transformations within the coating. This assumption was confirmed by isothermal experiments between 1050 and 1200°C. Post-experimental investigations of tested specimens were performed by optical and scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and EPMA.
