TL;DR: In this paper, a tool called HAZOP-LIKE study was developed for preliminary risk assessment of micro-designed equipment that are relatively unimportant when handling conventional equipment, and two generic cases concerning liquid/liquid and gas/gas reactions were studied to demonstrate the method.
Abstract: The new technology of process intensification by multiscale equipment can significantly contribute to achieve a safer design by going from batch/semi-batch to continuous operation combined with a reduction of inventory of hazardous substances in critical stages. On the other hand, the shift to higher space-time-yields comprises new risks such as runaway reactions with hot spot formation, described in Part I, and handling an explosive atmosphere in the presence of potential permanent ignition sources, described in Part II. A tool was developed for preliminary risk assessments, called HAZOP-LIKE study, to cover the characteristic features of micro-designed equipment that are relatively unimportant when handling conventional equipment. Two generic cases concerning liquid/liquid and gas/gas reactions were studied to demonstrate the method.

TL;DR: In this paper, thin and thick poly(3-methylthiophene) (PMT) films were electropolymerised on platinum electrodes and characterised by cyclic voltammetry and coulometry combined with optical measurements, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and gravimetrical measurements.

TL;DR: The analysis of the predictive value of this typing in individual CF families indicates that the combined use of these probes provides a powerful diagnostic system both for carrier detection and prenatal diagnosis.
Abstract: Two hundred and thirty five subjects from 48 German cystic fibrosis (CF) families were typed for restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs) detected by the probes pmet H, pmet D, and pJ 3.11, known to be tightly linked to the CF gene. Gene and haplotype frequencies suggest a linkage disequilibrium with the CF locus. The analysis of the predictive value of this typing in individual CF families indicates that the combined use of these probes provides a powerful diagnostic system both for carrier detection and prenatal diagnosis. In 33 out of 48 families carriers and non-carriers could be identified, and in 26 of these 33 families prenatal diagnosis could discriminate between affected and unaffected offspring.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a risk-informed management approach for river basins, which involves the integrated application of three key principles: be well informed, manage adaptively and take a participatory approach.
Abstract: As the pressures from both anthropogenic and natural causes on environmental systems increase, it is no longer effective or efficient to deal with one issue at a time, since solving a singular problem often causes damaging impacts on other environmental compartments or in other places. We must consider the consequences of our actions on all parts of the environment in an integrated way and configure these actions to cope with an uncertain future. These challenges demand a different approach in order to achieve actual improvement of the ecological quality of our river basins and thus sustain the goods and services they provide for the well-being of society. Risk-informed management is this new approach. It involves the integrated application of three key principles: be well informed, manage adaptively and take a participatory approach. This chapter introduces this risk-informed management approach as it was developed in the European Commission funded project RISKBASE and provides an introduction to rest of this book where the key principles are explained and underpinned in detail.
