Abstract: During screening of pollen suspensions of 20 species of higher plants against Colletotrichum capsici, Curvularia lunata and Helminthosporium oryzae, only grains of Xanthium strumarium L. inhibited their spore germination completely. Its toxicity did not alter at high temperatures and during autoclaving. However, toxicity was increased when the suspensions stored for 48 h were used. It inhibited 3 out of 11 additional fungi tested at 1: 200 (w/v) dilution during its fungitoxic spectrum.

Abstract: A theoretical analysis of the nematic behaviour of p - n -propoxybenzoic acid has been carried out on the basis of inter-molecular interaction energy calculations. CNDO/2 method has been employed to compute net atomic charges and atomic dipole components at each atomic centre of the molecule. Using the quantum-mechanical charge distribution, intermolecular interaction energy between a pair of p - n -propoxybenzoic acid molecules has been evaluated using second order perturbation theory and multicentered-multipole approximation method. Stacking as well as in-plane lateral interactions between a pair of the molecules, have been taken into account. On the basis of results obtained, an attempt has been made to elucidate the molecular ordering and other related parameters responsible for the mesomorphism of the system.

Abstract: A double trisomic plant (2x+1+1=16) was obtained in the progeny of diethyl sulphate (0.3 per cent) treated barley. It was weak and dwarf and produced few tillers with short spikes. Pollen and ovule fertility were 27.0 and 2.5 per cent, respectively. MI configurations were 1III+1I+6III, 2III+5II and 2I+7II, the former being the most frequent. V- and rod-shaped trivalents were more prominent. Unequal separations and lagging of chromosomes were observed at AI.

Abstract: The electrical conductivity (σ) and thermoelectric power (S) for the system La1−xNdxTlO3 (0 ⩽x⩽ 1.0) in the temperature range 295 to 805 K are reported. Both logσ andS as a function ofT have been found to be linear with a break in the slope around a specific temperature,TB. The break temperature systematically decreases as we proceed from the systemx=0 tox=1.0. It has been concluded that conduction belowTB is extrinsic and takes place owing to hopping of electrons localized on the defect centre Tl2+ to Tl3+ on normal sites. Conduction aboveTB is the normal band type in all systems. The energy band gap has been evaluated in all cases and it has been found that it decreases systematically fromx=0 tox=1.0.
