TL;DR: In this article, the leaf essential oil of Tagetes erecta has been found to have a statistically significant antifungal and insecticidal activity, but only partially affected the mycelial growth of any of the tested fungi.
Abstract: Chemical investigations on the leaf essential oil of Tagetes erecta, performed by HPLC, GC and GC–MS techniques, showed the presence of 26 components, accounting for 89% of the total oil. The major constituents were (Z)-β-ocimene (42.2%), dihydrotagetone (14.3%), (Z)-tagetone (8.3%), limonene (7.3%), (E)-ocimenone (6.1%) and (Z)-ocimenone (5.3%). The biocidal investigations showed that the oil possessed a significant but limited and dose-related antifungal and insecticidal activity. The oil showed 100% mortality of white termite (Odontotermes obesus Rhamb.) at a dose of 6 µl/Petri-plate after 24 h of exposure, while at lower doses and shorter exposures it showed diminished mortality rates. The oil only partially affected the mycelial growth of any of the tested fungi. Thus, the leaf oil of this plant, which is rich in (Z)-β-ocimene, has a statistically significant antifungal and insecticidal activity. Copyright © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors studied the effect of magnetic field on cavity formation inside a blast wave propagating into a perfectly conducting gas with density varying as some power of distance from the plane or line of explosion.
Abstract: In the present paper, we have made an attempt to study the effects of the presence of a magnetic field on the cavity formation inside a blast wave propagating into a perfectly conducting gas with density varying as some power of distance from the plane or line of explosion. In order to obtain the closed form solutions for the flow variables inside the blast wave and to solve the problem of cavity formation analytically, a relation is taken between the ordinary pressure and the total pressure. It i s found that if the value of the inhomogeneity index $\alpha$ is greater than a critical value $\alpha_c$ (a function of MA - Alfven Mach Number, $\gamma$ - adiabatic index and i - wave geometry index), a contact discontinuity appears at some point inside the blast wave and the cavity formation occurs. The effect of the presence of magnetic field is found to increase the tendency of cavity formation.

TL;DR: The repellent properties of different fractions isolated from Lantana camara flowers by using steam distillation, solvent partition and chromatographic methods were evaluated against Aedes mosquitoes and purification of the most efficient fraction into pure compounds resulted in any increase in repellency.
Abstract: : The repellent properties of different fractions isolated from Lantana camara flowers by using steam distillation, solvent partition and chromatographic methods were evaluated against Aedes mosquitoes. Maximum protection time of one fraction eluted by chloroform from a silica gel column was 3.45 h. One application of this fraction gave 100% protection for 2 h and may protect 75.8% at 7 h (t = 7.00, P < 0.001) against the bites of Aedes mosquitoes. Further purification of the most efficient fraction into pure compounds did not result in any increase in repellency.

TL;DR: Effect of single and binary treatments of plant‐derived molluscicides on different enzymes—acetylcholinesterase, lactic dehydrogenase, LDH and acid/alkaline phosphatase—in the nervous tissue of the harmful terrestrial snail Achatina fulica were studied.
Abstract: Effect of single and binary treatments of plant-derived molluscicides on different enzymes--acetylcholinesterase (AChE), lactic dehydrogenase (LDH) and acid/alkaline phosphatase (ACP/ALP)--in the nervous tissue of the harmful terrestrial snail Achatina fulica were studied. Sublethal in vivo 24-h exposure to 40% and 80% LC(50) of Azadirachta indica oil, Cedrus deodara oil, Allium sativum bulb powder, Nerium indicum bark powder and binary combinations of A. sativum (AS) + C. deodara (CD) and CD + A. indica (AI) oils significantly altered the activity of these enzymes in the nervous tissue of Achatina fulica. The binary treatment of AS + CD was more effective against AChE, LDH, and ALP than the single ones. However, binary treatment of AI + CD was more effective against ALP.

TL;DR: The dynamical organization of counterions and water molecules around the triplex formed by mixed sequences is described here and it has been observed that cations prefer to bind between two adjoining purines of the second and the third strands.
Abstract: A theoretical model for the hydration pattern and motion of ions around the triple helical DNA with mixed sequences d(GACTGGTGAC)d(GTCACCAGTC)*d(GACTGGTGAC) in solution, during MD simulation, using the particle mesh Ewald sum method, is elaborated here. The AMBER 5.0 force field has been used during the simulation in solvent. The simulation studies support a dynamically stable atmosphere around the DNA triplex in solution over the entire length of the trajectory. The results have been compared with Hoogsteen triplexes and examined in the context of the observed behaviour of hydration in crystallographic data of duplexes. The dynamical organization of counterions and water molecules around the triplex formed by mixed sequences is described here. It has been observed that cations prefer to bind between two adjoining purines of the second and the third strands. The idea of localized complexes (mobile counterions in unspecific electronegative pockets around the DNA triplex with water molecules) may have important implications for understanding the specificity of the interactions of nucleic acids with proteins and other ligands.

TL;DR: These extracts show mortality at higher concentration and recovery after 7th day of withdrawal, so the lower doses of purified form of stem-bark can be used as bio-pesticides for the control of aquatic weeds without environmental hazards.
Abstract: Stem-bark extracts of four different plants (Euphorbia royleana, Jatropha gossypifolia, Nerium indicum and Thevetia peruviana) caused mortality and biochemical changes in freshwater non-target fish Channa marulius. It was found that dilute stem-bark powder was effective in killing the fishes. The ranking of toxicity of four plants was N. indicum > E. royleana > J. gossypifolia and T. perucviana. Biochemical changes were observed in gonad tissue, after exposure to 40% and 80% of LC50 (24h) of stem-bark extract of all plants. Withdrawal experiments, showed recovery in total protein, total free amino acid, while partial slow recovery observed in glycogen level after 144 h on termination of experiment. It has been suggested that the alterations at both level (metabolic and enzyme) is due to activation of protein kinase C. These extracts show mortality at higher concentration and recovery after 7th day of withdrawal. So, the lower doses of purified form of stem-bark can be used as bio-pesticides for the control of aquatic weeds without environmental hazards.

TL;DR: In this article, the matching of continuous gravitational wave (CGW) signals in an all sky search with reference to Earth-based laser interferometric detectors was investigated, where the source location was considered as the parameters of the signal manifold and templates corresponding to different source locations.
Abstract: We investigate the matching of continuous gravitational wave (CGW) signals in an all sky search with reference to Earth based laser interferometric detectors. We consider the source location as the parameters of the signal manifold and templates corresponding to different source locations. It has been found that the matching of signals from locations in the sky that differ in their co-latitude and longitude by π radians decreases with source frequency. We have also made an analysis with the other parameters affecting the symmetries. We observe that it may not be relevant to take care of the symmetries in the sky locations for the search of CGW from the output of LIGO-I, GEO600 and TAMA detectors.
