Abstract: Yogurt (prepared from buffalo's milk) samples treated with anise volatile oil and its oleoresin (ethanol) at varying concentrations (01–10 g/L) were stored up to 20 days at 4 ± 1C The physicochemical and microbiological qualities of yogurt samples were analyzed at 5-day interval during storage A gradual increase in acidity and syneresis was observed, whereas a decline in pH and total solid contents was noted in all the samples The studies revealed that incorporation of essential oil and oleoresin of anise at 10 g/L concentration is quite effective in controlling the growth of spoilage microorganisms in yogurt The results also suggest that the addition of anise volatile oil and oleoresin has no adverse effect on the physicochemical properties of yogurt PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS Essential oils and oleoresins of anise can be used as food preservatives for yogurt

Abstract: The methanolic, chloroform and ether extracts of Euphorbia tirucalli latex and stem bark were evaluated for larvicidal activity against laboratory-reared larvae of Culex quinquefasciatus (Diptera: Culicidae), vector of the brancroftian filariasis and worst urban nuisance mosquito. The latex extracts contain more potent larvicidal components (177.14 mg/L-326.37 mg/L) than the stem bark extracts (237.663 mg/L-513.39 mg/L). The order of toxicity (LC50) for the latex extracts was Methanol extract (177.14 mg/L) > Chloroform (200.76 mg/L) > Ether (326.37 mg/L) while the rank of order of toxicity (LC50) of stem bark extracts was Ether (237.66 mg/L) > Chloroform (343.515 mg/L) > Methanol (513.387 mg/L), Higher doses (LC90 24 h of mosquito larvae) of each extract did not cause any mortality among fishes after 24 h. The study gave a weight into the possibility of formulating suitable preparation from the latex and stem bark extracts of the plant for use in mosquito control programme.

Abstract: The molluscicidal activity of Punica granatum Linn. (Punicaceae) and Canna indica Linn. (Cannaceae) against the snail Lymnaea acuminata was studied. The molluscicidal activity of P. granatum bark and C. indica root was found to be both time and dose dependent. The toxicity of P. granatum bark was more pronounced than that of C. indica. The 24 h LC(50) of the column-purified root of C. indica was 6.54 mg/l whereas that of the column-purified bark of P. granatum was 4.39 mg/l. The ethanol extract of P. granatum (24 h LC(50): 22.42 mg/l) was more effective than the ethanol extract of C. indica (24 h LC(50): 55.65 mg/l) in killing the test animals. P. granatum and C. indica may be used as potent molluscicides since the concentrations used to kill the snails were not toxic for the fish Colisa fasciatus, which shares the same habitat with the snail L. acuminata.

Abstract: Haematological parameters, such as erythrocyte and leucocyte count, erythrocyte indices and thrombocyte number vis-a-vis coagulation of blood has been considered bioindicators of toxicosis in fish following exposure to organochlorine, organophosphate, carbamate and pyrethroid insecticides. This review deals with the effects of insecticides on the morphology of red blood cells, total erythrocyte count, haemoglobin content, haematocrit, mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular haemoglobin, mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, total and differential leucocyte counts, thrombocyte count and clotting time in the peripheral blood of a number of teleosts. The review also takes stock of knowledge of the subject and explores prospects of additional research in the related area.

Abstract: The formation and stabilization of telomeric quadruplexes has been shown to inhibit the activity of telomerase, thus establishing telomeric DNA quadruplex as an attractive target for cancer therapeutic intervention. In this context, telomestatin, a G-quadruplex-specific ligand known to bind and stabilize G-quadruplex, is of great interest. Knowledge of the three-dimensional structure of telomeric quadruplex and its complex with telomestatin in solution is a prerequisite for structure-based rational drug design. Here, we report the relative stabilities of human telomeric quadruplex (AG3[T2AG3]3) structures under K+ ion conditions and their binding interaction with telomestatin, as determined by molecular dynamics simulations followed by energy calculations. The energetics study shows that, in the presence of K+ ions, mixed hybrid-type Tel-22 quadruplex conformations are more stable than other conformations.
