Abstract: The essential oil of Mentha arvensis L was extracted by water distillation method and the insecticidal properties of M arvensis were evaluated under laboratory conditions The oil showed repellency and toxicity against T castaneum (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) and S oryzae (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) The result revealed that this essential oil strongly repels T castaneum and S oryzae even at low concentration, but its repellency was more marked towards S oryzae The essential oil of M arvensis showed toxic effects against insect pests The toxicity of newly molted 4th instars larvae of T castaneum and 10-day-old-adults of T castaneum and S oryzae increased with concentration from 15 to 30 μL/100 μL and with exposure time 24 to 48 h The LC50 against the larvae of T castaneum was 18685 μL at 48 h exposure The LC50 against T castaneum and S oryzae adults were 22759 μL and 21788 μL at 48 h exposure, respectively

Abstract: Male Wistar rats were randomly divided into three groups – A, B and C. A dose of 5 mg and 10 mg of cadmium chloride/kg body weight/day was orally administered to groups B and C, respectively. Rats from group A served as control. Rats were sacrificed on 1st, 2nd, 4th, 6th, and 8th week after initiation of the experiment. Kidneys were removed immediately, fixed in Bouin's fixative, routinely processed and stained with hematoxylin and eosin. The present study showed that the histopathological changes were caused in kidney of rats by cadmium exposure. The changes noticed were mainly – the glomerular swelling (at initial stage), the shrinkage of glomerulus (at later stage), the tubular dilatation, hypertrophy of tubular epithelium, degeneration of glomerulus and renal tubules and deposition of eosin-positive substances in the glomerulus and renal tubules. However, lesions were depended upon the doses and duration of the treatment.

Abstract: Ionically bound peroxidases (POD) were salt extracted from the pulp of four Indian apple varieties, i.e., Golden delicious HP, Golden delicious JK, Red delicious, and Royal delicious. They were precipitated with chilled ethanol. Thermal treatments of partially purified enzymes were given from 40-70 degrees C for 30 minutes. Golden delicious HP peroxidase showed thermostability at 60 degrees C, while three other peroxidases were observed at 50 degrees C. Phenolic compounds (i.e., caffeic acid, ferulic acids, p-coumaric acid, protocatechuic acid) and metal ions (i.e., Cu2+ and Fe2+) activated all apple peroxidases. However, Mn2+ inhibited the peroxidases from Golden delicious HP, Golden delicious JK, and Red delicious, and a substantial increase was observed in Royal delicious peroxidase. Mg2+ inhibited the peroxidases from Golden delicious HP and Red delicious, but marginal activation was reported in peroxidases from Golden delicious JK and Royal delicious. Zn2+ established stimulation in Golden delicious HP and Golden delicious JK peroxidases, but inhibition was observed in peroxidases in Red delicious and Royal delicious.. Methionine, proline, tryptophan, and valine stimulated all four apple peroxidases, but cysteine showed inhibition in Golden delicious JK.

Abstract: Adult Lymnaea acuminata (average length 20-22 mm) were collected locally from lakes and low-lying submerged fields from Gorakhpur. The chemoattraction studies were made in round glass aquaria measuring 30 cm in diameter and filled to a depth of 10 mm with 500 ml dechlorinated tap water. Each aquarium was divided into four concentric zones. At the starting time of the assay 10 snails were placed on the circumference of outermost zone 0. Snail attractant pellets (SAP) were added simultaneously in the center of central zone 3. SAP of different amino acids were prepared at concentrations of 10, 20, 50, 80 and 100 mM/2% agar solution and, subsequently, spread to a uniform thickness of 5 mm. After cooling, SAP were cut in small pieces of 5 mm in diameter. Lymnaea acuminata's attraction to amino acids was studied using different amino acid concentrations in SAP. Pellets containing amino acids with non-polar R groups (proline and tryptophan), a charged polar group (arginine) and uncharged polar R groups (serine, citrulline and asparagine) were tested. The snails were more attracted to the uncharged polar R group amino acid serine than to other groups of amino acids. The preferred amino acid concentration was 80 mM. The attraction of snails to different amino acids was concentration dependent. Snails could discriminate amongst the different amino acids at > or = 50 mM.
