Abstract: Ternary sodium–cobalt–phosphate glasses of the composition (50 − x )Na 2 O–50P 2 O 5 – x CoCl 2 with x varying between 0 and 15 mol% prepared by melt quenching have been characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. Thermal ( T g , T c ) and electrical properties have been investigated. Infrared spectra reveal the formation of metaphosphate glasses ( Q 2 tetrahedral units) with symmetric bridging oxygen (P–O–P) and non-bridging oxygen (P–O − ). The spectra also indicate the formation of P–O–Co bonds in the metaphosphate glasses that replace P–O − –Na + bonds. The results of thermal studies correlate with these FT-IR findings and support the formation of P–O–Co bonds and an increased cross-link density with increasing CoCl 2 . This results in enhanced chemical durability and increased T g and T c of the glasses. The electrical conductivity parameters upon changing the composition have been correlated with structural changes in the glass matrix.

Abstract: The essential oil and oleoresins (methanol, ethanol, isooctane and CCl4) from tejpat have been used as a natural food preservative for pineapple juice. The stored samples were studied for pH, total and reducing sugars, ascorbic acid, peroxide value, titrable acidity and microbiological count at fixed time intervals of 7 days. Significant changes were observed during the storage period. The essential oil showed better preservative effect than the oleoresins did. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS Essential oils and oleoresins derived from spices are considered luxurious items because of their uses in aromatherapy, confectionary, beverages and pharmaceutical industries. Moreover, they also possess antioxidant and antimicrobial efficiency. Essential oil and oleoresins extracted from tejpat are used in the preservation of pineapple juice, which is better and safer than synthetic conservers. This characteristic is of great interest for the food industries.

Abstract: Channa punctatus was exposed to four different concentrations of Rutin, Taraxerol and Apigenin. Changes in some hematological parameters of Channa punctatus were assessed to determine the influence of these compounds on test fish. Fish were exposed to sublethal concentrations (80% of LC50 of 24h) of these compounds for one week. Control fish were also administered for one week. Thereafter, blood samples were obtained from the control and experimental fish. Blood was assayed for selected hematological parameters (hematocrit, hemoglobin, red blood cell count, white blood cell count total plasma protein and plasma glucose concentration). The derived hematological indices of mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH) and mean corpuscular volume (MCV) were calculated. Sublethal concentrations of these compounds caused a dose dependent decrease in hemoglobin values coupled with a decrease in hematocrit values and red blood cell counts are an obvious indication of anemia. The total white blood cell counts and the differential white blood cell counts were decreased except for the lymphocytes, where there was a slight increase. Plasma protein and glucose were also lower in exposed fish when compared with control. The hematological indices MCH, MCHC, MCV were also lowered. The result from this study reveals high mortality rate and deleterious consequences on the health of fish subjected to acute exposure of Rutin, Taraxerol and Apigenin and therefore, should not be used directly in aquaculture without having the proper knowledge.
