Abstract: Over the past decade, pomegranate (Punica granatum) is entitled as a wonder fruit because of its voluminous pharmacological properties. In 1830, P. granatum fruit was first recognized in United States Pharmacopeia; the Philadelphia edition introduced the rind of the fruit, the New York edition the bark of the root and further 1890 edition the stem bark was introduced. There are significant efforts and progress made in establishing the pharmacological mechanisms of peel (pericarp or rind) and the individual constituents responsible for them. This review provides an insight on the phytochemical components that contribute too antihyperglycemic, hepatoprotective, antihyperlipidemic effect, and numerous other effects of wonderful, economic, and eco-friendly pomegranate peel extract (PP).

Abstract: Breast cancer is a leading cause of death in women worldwide both in the developed and developing countries. Thus effective treatment of breast cancer with potential antitumour drugs is important. In this paper, human breast cancer cell line MCF-7 has been employed to evaluate the antiproliferative activity of red sorghum bran anthocyanin. The present investigation showed that red sorghum bran anthocyanin induced growth inhibition of MCF-7 cells at significant level. The growth inhibition is dose dependent and irreversible in nature. When MCF-7 cells were treated with red sorghum bran anthocyanins due to activity of anthocyanin morphological changes were observed. The morphological changes were identified through the formation of apoptopic bodies. The fragmentation by these anthocyanins on DNA to oligonuleosomal-sized fragments, is a characteristic of apoptosis, and it was observed as concentration-dependent. Thus, this paper clearly demonstrates that human breast cancer cell MCF-7 is highly responsive by red sorghum bran anthocyanins result from the induction of apoptosis in MCF-7 cells.

Abstract: Global environmental protection is of immediate concern that can only be achieved by avoiding the use of fossil fuels and tailpipe emissions. In addition, investment on waste disposal is not economical; however, recycling of the same waste for renewable energy production is favorable in the economic and social development of the society in an eco-friendly manner. Utilization of biodegradable wastes, such as agricultural and forestry residues, and non-edible plant matter for value-added bioproducts is a promising, inexpensive, and abundant clean substitute of fossil fuels. There has been extensive research on the conversion of lignocellulosic materials to biofuels over the past few decades. The recalcitrance of lignin in crop residues, however, impedes polysaccharide accessibility and its transformation into commercially significant choice of value-added products. Traditional physiochemical and thermal methods are hampered by high-cost processing steps in pretreatment and saccharification, and also require additional maintenance and care due to the generation of eco-unfriendly compounds. Recent advances in novel consolidated bioprocessing through mixed consortium are promising choices to reduce both the number of operational steps and the production of inhibitors with higher conversion efficiency. Although biofilm-based technologies have been successfully applied for wastewater and solid waste treatment, their potential application in biofuel production has been unexplored. The present review focuses on the state-of-the-art development of biofuel production by mixed consortium and also recent strategies to improve biofuel yield including the metabolic pathway construction.
