TL;DR: In this paper, the authors analyze why U.S. commercial banks failed during the recent financial crisis and find that proxies for commercial real estate investments, as well as traditional proxies for the CAMELS components, do an excellent job in explaining the failures of banks that were closed during 2009.
Abstract: In this study, we analyze why U.S. commercial banks failed during the recent financial crisis. We find that proxies for commercial real estate investments, as well as traditional proxies for the CAMELS components, do an excellent job in explaining the failures of banks that were closed during 2009, just as they did in the previous banking crisis of 1985 – 1992. Surprisingly, we do not find that residential mortgage-backed securities played a significant role in determining which banks failed and which banks survived.

04 Sep 2000TL;DR: This paper presents a framework for Web usage mining, distinguishing between the offine tasks of data preparation and mining, and the online process of customizing Web pages based on a user's active session, and describes effective techniques based on clustering to obtain a uniform representation for both site usage and site content profiles.
Abstract: Recent proposals have suggested Web usage mining as an enabling mechanism to overcome the problems associated with more traditional Web personalization techniques such as collaborative or content-based filtering. These problems include lack of scalability, reliance on subjective user ratings or static profiles, and the inability to capture a richer set of semantic relationships among objects (in content-based systems). Yet, usage-based personalization can be problematic when little usage data is available pertaining to some objects or when the site content changes regularly. For more effective personalization, both usage and content attributes of a site must be integrated into a Web mining framework and used by the recommendation engine in a uniform manner. In this paper we present such a framework, distinguishing between the offine tasks of data preparation and mining, and the online process of customizing Web pages based on a user's active session. We describe effective techniques based on clustering to obtain a uniform representation for both site usage and site content profiles, and we show how these profiles can be used to perform real-time personalization.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors identify and analyze a sample of publicly traded Chinese firms that issued loan guarantees to their related parties (usually the controlling block holders), thereby expropriating wealth from minority shareholders.
Abstract: We identify and analyze a sample of publicly traded Chinese firms that issued loan guarantees to their related parties (usually the controlling block holders), thereby expropriating wealth from minority shareholders. Our results show that the issuance of related guarantees is less likely at smaller firms, at more profitable firms and at firms with higher growth prospects. We also find that the identity and ownership of block holders affect the likelihood of expropriation. In addition, we use this sample to provide new evidence on the relation between tunneling and proxies for firm value and financial performance. We find that Tobin’s Q, ROA and dividend yield are significantly lower, and that leverage is significantly higher, at firms that issued related guarantees.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors examined when and how organizations create agility, adaptability, and alignment as distinct supply chain properties to gain sustainable competitive advantage, and provided a holistic study of the antecedents of agility, adaptive and alignment.
Abstract: Purpose: To examine when and how organizations create agility, adaptability, and alignment as distinct supply chain properties to gain sustainable competitive advantage.
Design/methodology/approach: The current study utilizes the resource-based view (RBV) under the moderating effect of top management commitment. To test our research hypotheses, we gathered 351 usable responses using a pre-tested questionnaire.
Findings: Our statistical analyses suggest that information sharing and supply chain connectivity resources influence supply chain visibility capability, which, under the moderating effect of top management commitment, enhance supply chain agility, adaptability and alignment.
Originality/value: Our contribution lies in: (i) providing a holistic study of the antecedents of agility, adaptability and alignment; (ii) investigating the moderating role of top management commitment on supply chain agility, adaptability and alignment; (iii) following the RBV and addressing calls for investigating the role of resources in supply chain management, and for empirical studies with implications for supply chain design.
