TL;DR: In this paper, a method for comprehensive integrated control of an internal combustion engine, such as a compression-ignition engine, utilizing an electronic control module utilizing an ECC module is presented.
Abstract: A method for comprehensive integrated control of an internal combustion engine, such as a compression-ignition engine, utilizing an electronic control module (20) is disclosed. The control strategy integrates various functions of engine control including an acceleration balance test for the engine cylinders, a fuel economy vehicle speed limit adder, a fuelling limit for high altitude vehicle operation, throttle logic, a data-hub for operation trending and vehicle component lifting analyses, a gear ratio torque limit, an air temperature based torque limit, enhanced cooling fan control, and a idle shutdown strategy based on ambient air temperature.

TL;DR: In this article, a method for comprehensive integrated control of a compression-ignition internal combustion engine having integral fuel pump-injectors utilizing an electronic control unit (20) is disclosed.
Abstract: A method for comprehensive integrated control of a compression-ignition internal combustion engine having integral fuel pump-injectors utilizing an electronic control unit (20) is disclosed. The control strategy integrates various functions of engine control including fuel delivery (34), cooling fan control (38), engine speed governing and overspeed protection, engine braking, torque control, and vehicle speed diagnostics and control. Cooling fan control (38) is integrated with vehicle speed diagnostics and control as well as fuel delivery (34) to provide an integrated cruise control function which incorporates engine braking. The method also includes improved control over the various engine speed governors while improving idle quality by balancing the power delivered by each of the engine cylinders when at idle. The integrated torque control employs functions to reduce NOx emissions and noise utilizing adaptive fuel delivery timing and a split injection strategy.

TL;DR: In this article, a time dependent, transonic inviscid cascade code coupled with a modified version of the STAN5 boundary layer code featuring zero-order turbulence modeling was used to predict airfoil surface heat transfer distributions in a 2D flow field.
Abstract: Three airfoil data sets were selected for use in evaluating currently available analytical models for predicting airfoil surface heat transfer distributions in a 2-D flow field Two additional airfoils, representative of highly loaded, low solidity airfoils currently being designed, were selected for cascade testing at simulated engine conditions Some 2-D analytical methods were examined and a version of the STAN5 boundary layer code was chosen for modification The final form of the method utilized a time dependent, transonic inviscid cascade code coupled to a modified version of the STAN5 boundary layer code featuring zero order turbulence modeling The boundary layer code is structured to accommodate a full spectrum of empirical correlations addressing the coupled influences of pressure gradient, airfoil curvature, and free-stream turbulence on airfoil surface heat transfer distribution and boundary layer transitional behavior Comparison of pedictions made with the model to the data base indicates a significant improvement in predictive capability

TL;DR: In this article, a grid-like capacitive sensor for detecting the degree of deterioration of a lubricating oil for an operating machine includes a grid of magnet windings aligned such that the magnetic field produced by each winding acts upon the wear particles, and a plurality of capacitance measurements are taken at periodic intervals at each of several magnet operational states.
Abstract: A method and apparatus for detecting the degree of deterioration of a lubricating oil for an operating machine includes a grid-like capacitive sensor (20) that uses the lubricating oil as a dielectric medium. A magnetic field is imposed upon the oil to attract ferromagnetic wear particles into the vicinity of the sensor. Preferably, the magnetic field is generated by at least two independently controlled electromagnet windings (26, 28) aligned such that the magnetic field produced by each winding acts upon the wear particles. A plurality of capacitance measurements are taken at periodic intervals at each of several magnet operational states for respective classification and analysis. All windings may be simultaneously de-energized for release of captured particles back in to an oil circulation stream and to clean the capacitative sensor grid of accumulated particulates.
