TL;DR: This article shows how many passers-by pass the thresholds between these phases of interaction with gesture-based public display systems, and describes the phases of passing by a display, viewing & reacting, subtle interaction, direct interaction, multiple interactions, and follow-up actions.
Abstract: Data are presented from observations of Magical Mirrors, a set of four large public displays with gesture-based interaction installed in downtown Berlin, Germany. The displays show a mirror image of the environment in front of them and react with optical effects to the gestures of the audience. Observations of audience behavior revealed recurring behavioral patterns, like glancing at a first display while passing it, moving the arms to cause some effects, then directly approaching one of the following displays and positioning oneself in the center of the display. This was often followed by positioning oneself in the center of the other displays to explore the possibilities of the different effects, and sometimes by taking photographs or videos. From these observations a framework of interaction with gesture-based public display systems was deduced. It describes the phases of passing by a display, viewing & reacting, subtle interaction, direct interaction, multiple interactions, and follow-up actions. Quan...

09 Jan 2002TL;DR: In this article, a method and a device for decoding for use in a code-division multiple access (CDMA) transmission system for demodulating a received signal available in serial code concatenation, with a two-step coding being carried out at the transmitting end of the transmission system.
Abstract: A method and a device for decoding for use in a code-division multiple access (CDMA) transmission system for demodulating a received signal available in serial code concatenation, with a two-step coding being carried out at the transmitting end of the transmission system, including an orthogonal, multi-step inner Hadamard code and an outer, error-correcting code of a predefined rate. In the receiver, a soft-in/soft-out decoder is provided, at whose input and output soft values are processed as reliability information, i.e., L-values. The soft output of the first decoder step, or inner code is the soft input for the decoder step, or outer code, that follows in each case, the first decoder step receiving the output values of the preceding demodulation, which contain the channel's reliability information. A soft output is used by the decoder, in particular a MAP decoder, as a-priori information for the systematic bits of the Walsh function of the inner code for decoding of the inner code.

TL;DR: It becomes obvious that home networks consume the largest share of energy in TC networks, and highest energy consumption shares are observed in the fixed and mobile access networks with a huge number of distributed network elements in the field.
Abstract: In this study, energy consumption of a universal network operator's broadband telecommunication (TC) network, including the home networks that are required for the use of services over a period of approximately one decade is predicted, whereby it is assumed that no measures for an energy-efficiency increase are taken. It becomes obvious that home networks consume the largest share of energy in TC networks. Concerning the network sections under the responsibility of network operator, highest energy consumption shares are observed in the fixed and mobile access networks with a huge number of distributed network elements in the field. The highest energy consumption growth rates are foreseen in the data centers and IP backbone networks. Methods for reducing energy consumption are being classified and metrics for energy-related assessment of networks are compared. Furthermore, challenges and opportunities for energy-related improvements are discussed with respect to different network sections. A projection into the future shows high-energy-saving potential when combining different energy-reducing methods, such as load-adaptive networking and energy-aware system design. A brief view on related standardization activities shows high interest of standardization bodies in energy consumption of TC networks and confirms its current importance.

15 Jun 2009TL;DR: This paper proposes transmitting multiterabyte data through commercial ISPs by taking advantage of already-paid-for off-peak bandwidth resulting from diurnal traffic patterns and percentile pricing, and shows that between sender-receiver pairs with small time-zone difference, simple source scheduling policies are able to take advantage of most of the existing off- peak capacity.
Abstract: Many emerging scientific and industrial applications require transferring multiple Tbytes of data on a daily basis Examples include pushing scientific data from particle accelerators/colliders to laboratories around the world, synchronizing data-centers across continents, and replicating collections of high definition videos from events taking place at different time-zones A key property of all above applications is their ability to tolerate delivery delays ranging from a few hours to a few days Such Delay Tolerant Bulk (DTB) data are currently being serviced mostly by the postal system using hard drives and DVDs, or by expensive dedicated networks In this work we propose transmitting such data through commercial ISPs by taking advantage of already-paid-for off-peak bandwidth resulting from diurnal traffic patterns and percentile pricing We show that between sender-receiver pairs with small time-zone difference, simple source scheduling policies are able to take advantage of most of the existing off-peak capacity When the time-zone difference increases, taking advantage of the full capacity requires performing store-and-forward through intermediate storage nodes We present an extensive evaluation of the two options based on traffic data from 200+ links of a large transit provider with PoPs at three continents Our results indicate that there exists huge potential for performing multi Tbyte transfers on a daily basis at little or no additional cost

TL;DR: The air interface landscape that is envisioned for 5G, and how this will likely be harmonized and integrated into an overall 5G RAN is depicted, in the form of concrete control and user plane design considerations and architectural enablers for network slicing, supporting independent business-driven logical networks on a common infrastructure.
Abstract: While there is clarity on the wide range of applications that are to be supported by 5G cellular communications, and standardization of 5G has now started in 3GPP, there is no conclusion yet on the detailed design of the overall 5G RAN. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the 5G RAN design guidelines, key design considerations, and functional innovations as identified and developed by key players in the field.1 It depicts the air interface landscape that is envisioned for 5G, and elaborates on how this will likely be harmonized and integrated into an overall 5G RAN, in the form of concrete control and user plane design considerations and architectural enablers for network slicing, supporting independent business-driven logical networks on a common infrastructure. The article also explains key functional design considerations for the 5G RAN, highlighting the difference to legacy systems such as LTE-A and the implications of the overall RAN design.
