Abstract: The increasing complexity of enterprise information systems makes it very difficult to prevent local failures from causing ripple effects with serious repercussions to other systems. This paper proposes the use of Enterprise Architecture models coupled with Bayesian Belief Networks to facilitate Failure Impact Analysis. By extending the Enterprise Architecture models with the Bayesian Belief Networks we are able to show not only the architectural components and their interconnections but also the causal influence the availabilities of the architectural elements have on each other. Furthermore, by using the Diagnosis algorithm implemented in the Bayesian Belief Network tool GeNIe, we are able to use the network as a Decision Support System and rank architectural components with their respect to criticality for the functioning of a business process. An example featuring a car rental agency demonstrates the approach.

16 Jul 1998TL;DR: In this paper, a transcoder provided with a control unit and intended for decoding encoded TV programs is described, which is characterized in that the interface for the identification or key component is located in said control unit.
Abstract: The invention pertains to a transcoder provided with a control unit and intended for decoding encoded TV programs Said transcoder has an input for entering an encoded TV program, a decoding device for decoding an encoded TV program into a format which can be played on a television set, an output which can be connected to said television set and is designed to enter the encoded TV program into the television set for play, an interface for an identification or key component, to be used for validation of the decoding device, as well as an interface for a control unit in the transcoder The transcoder according to the invention is characterized in that the interface for the identification or key component is located in said control unit

TL;DR: In this paper, the femtosecond pulses of a collinearly pumped optical parametric oscillator (OPO) are applied for investigations of the carrier dynamics in ternary and quaternary semiconductor quantum wells.
Abstract: Femtosecond pulses of a collinearly pumped Optical Parametric Oscillator (OPO) are applied for investigations of the carrier dynamics in ternary and quaternary semiconductor quantum wells. The design and the specifications of the OPO are given in detail. We show that no measurable jitter exists between the pump pulses and the output pulses of the OPO. Therefore, it is possible to use the OPO and its pump laser for two-color experiments with a time resolution limited by the pulse lengths. We present and discuss results of transient four-wave mixing experiments on (InGa) As/InP quantum wells, and find a new kind of polarization-dependent quantum beat phenomenon. In addition, non-degenerate experiments on quantum wells from the quaternary (InGaAl) As material system, using two pulses at different wavelengths (one from the OPO and one from the pump laser), are discussed as a novel experimental technique to study carrier trapping into quantum wells.

06 Feb 1997TL;DR: In this article, a distinction between on-line terminals at all times have access to a data connection and stand-alone terminals that have no data connection is made, and the use of smart cards to be improved so that a data exchange is enabled with a low data rate without data connection.
Abstract: At current terminal, a distinction between on-line terminals at all times have access to a data connection and off-line terminals or stand-alone terminals that have no data connection. On-Line Terminals can exchange at any time via a temporary or permanent data connection information and / or data. The off-line or stand-alone terminals do not have this immediate opportunity or ability. It is specified here as the off-line terminals with minor modifications and the use of smart cards to be improved so that a data exchange is enabled with a low data rate without a data connection. This is done in that the customer smart card to the mobile data carrier (4). Every time you use a smart card to an off-line terminal data between the smart card and the terminal to be replaced. These smart cards now acts as a transport medium to and from a central computer (2), a database or a client-server system in a way that is now on-line enabled devices replaced the non-time-critical data in the use of smart card to another become. Examples of advantageous applications are: Use of paycards as a payment medium to service machines (such as ticket vending machines), and settlement with the card issuer. Exchange of telemetry data from devices in the road network (off-line) with a system control center (on-line) by means of a car (mobile data carrier (4)), for example, for the collection of tolls. Access control systems that do not require complex wiring. The access medium is the mobile data carrier (4), the access control point is the off-line station (5) and an appropriately equipped main door represents, for example, the on-line station (1).
