Abstract: Mobile phones are rapidly becoming small-size general purpose computers, so-called smartphones. However, applications and data stored on mobile phones are less protected from unauthorized access than on most desktop and mobile computers. This paper presents a survey on users' security needs, awareness and concerns in the context of mobile phones. It also evaluates acceptance and perceived protection of existing and novel authentication methods. The responses from 465 participants reveal that users are interested in increased security and data protection. The current protection by using PIN (Personal Identification Number) is perceived as neither adequate nor convenient in all cases. The sensitivity of data stored on the devices varies depending on the data type and the context of use, asking for the need for another level of protection. According to these findings, a two-level security model for mobile phones is proposed. The model provides differential data and service protection by utilizing existing capabilities of a mobile phone for authenticating users.

Abstract: A capital expenditure model is a key requirement to evaluate multilayer (ML) metro and core network architectures. Based on the Internet protocol/multiprotocol label switching (IP/MPLS), MPLS-transport profile, optical transport network and WDM technology, a detailed capital expenditure model developed by researchers from system vendors and network operators is introduced. Besides current equipment and corresponding prices for the different layers, it also contains predictions for technology evolution and pricing until 2018. We show how to determine the price of anML node by constructing it from components specified in the cost model. We use the model in a case study where we benchmark the price of an integrated IP/MPLS/WDM solution.

Abstract: High-speed transmission in multimode fibers (MMF) is becoming attractive for the realization of high-capacity transmission systems at low cost. This paper discusses the theoretical background of MMF transmission and gives an overview on system characterization and existing standards. The authors review latest achievements in component development for highest-speed MMF systems and discuss the challenges on reach, speed, and capacity-extension techniques for next generations of MMF systems.

Abstract: Standard Bragg filters (dielectric waveguides with a grating overlay) show a stopband only in reflection. Filters with quarter-wave-shifted gratings have an extremely narrow transmission peak the center of the stopband but its shape (a sharp triangle with a broad bottom) is not suitable for system design. Using standard coupled-mode theory together with transfer-matrix formalism, we show that by introducing several phase-shift regions and properly choosing their locations and magnitudes the transmission spectrum can be tailored into a nearly rectangular shape. For InP-InGaAsP based Bragg-grating filters estimates are made of achievable channel spacings in wavelength-division multiplexing systems.

We discuss research and standardization activities in the area of service support platforms and their corresponding application programming interfaces (API), where we especially focus on the wireless application protocol (WAP), Mobile Station Execution Environment (MExE), and HTTP-NG as candidates for the provision of mobile Internet services in cellular networks.
