17 Jun 2015TL;DR: This work addresses the problem of revision control for flow state management in SDN-enabled networks, so that the underlying data plane might be able to provide better state protection, provenance, ease of programmability, and support for multiple applications.
Abstract: Our work addresses the problem of revision control for flow state management in SDN-enabled networks, so that the underlying data plane might be able to provide better state protection, provenance, ease of programmability, and support for multiple applications. Inspired by the revision control tools in the software development world, we propose an abstraction and a system called GitFlow, which provides flow state revisioning in the SDN context. The core idea of GitFlow is to run a repository server to maintain the authoritative copy of the flow configuration state and track additional meta data for each evolving snapshot of the flow state. When multiple applications make incremental commits to state, our system also automates conflict resolution by rebasing new flow state with committed flow state. We envision that our revision control abstraction will provide safety in the data plane and better programmability in the control plane.

TL;DR: The design, implementation, and evaluation of an automatic and robust multi-user breadcrumb system for indoor first response applications is described and UF, a distributed cooperative deployment algorithm, is proposed to achieve longer Breadcrumb chain lengths while maintaining fairness and high system reliability.
Abstract: Breadcrumb systems (BCS) aid first responders by communicating their physiological parameters to remotely located base stations. In this paper, we describe the design, implementation, and evaluation of an automatic and robust multi-user breadcrumb system for indoor first response applications. Our solution includes a breadcrumb dispenser with a link estimator that is used to decide when to deploy breadcrumbs to maintain reliable wireless connectivity. The solution includes accounting for realities of buildings and dispensing such as the height difference between where the dispenser is worn and the floor where the dispensed nodes are found. We also include adaptive power management to maintain link quality over time. Moreover, we propose UF, a distributed cooperative deployment algorithm, to achieve longer breadcrumb chain lengths while maintaining fairness and high system reliability via selecting appropriate benefit and cost functions. We deployed and evaluated our system in real buildings with several different first responder mobility patterns. Experimental results from our study show that compared to the state of the art solution , our breadcrumb system achieves 200 percent link redundancy with only 23 percent additional deployed nodes. Our deployed breadcrumb chain can achieve 90 percent PRR when one node fails in the chain. In addition, by applying the UF coordination algorithm, the system can maintain connectivity for up to 87 percent longer distances than baseline greedy coordination approach while maintaining 96 percent packet delivery ratio.

21 Feb 2013TL;DR: In this paper, a method for optimizing network spectrum utilization of a wireless communications network utilizing a radiofrequency spectrum includes determining, by a processor, spectrum resources at a location by determining the properties of the communication nodes and the utilization of bandwidth by all priority classes of user terminals in a defined area.
Abstract: A method for optimizing network spectrum utilization of a wireless communications network utilizing a radiofrequency spectrum includes determining, by a processor, spectrum resources at a location by determining the properties of the communication nodes and the utilization of bandwidth by all priority classes of user terminals in a defined area. Future geo-located contextual network needs for users terminals of a plurality of priority classes in the defined area is predicted by the processor based on historical profiles. The use of the radiofrequency spectrum is optimized by the processor based on the priority classes of the user terminals and the future geo-located contextual network needs of the user terminals in the defined area.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors focus on the impact of innovation policies and R&D collaboration in Germany and Finland and perform an econometric matching to analyze R&DI and patent activity at the firm level.
Abstract: This study focuses on the impact of innovation policies and R&D collaboration in Germany and Finland. We consider collaboration and subsidies as heterogeneous treatments, and perform an econometric matching to analyze R&D and patent activity at the firm level. In general, we find that collaboration has positive effects. In Germany, subsidies for individual research do neither exhibit a significant impact on R&D nor on patenting, but the innovative performance could be improved by additional incentives for collaboration. For Finnish companies, public funding is an important source of finance for R&D. Without subsidies, recipients would show less R&D and patenting activity, whilst those firms not receiving subsidies would perform significantly better if they were publicly funded.

28 Feb 2002TL;DR: In this paper, a method for measurement and determination of medical information using a communications device with appropriate sensors, miniature computer, software and encryption software is presented, where signals corresponding to medical values such as blood pressure, temperature, or pulse rate are processed and calculated for appropriate use.
Abstract: Method for measurement and determination of medical information using a communications device with appropriate sensors, miniature computer, software and encryption software. Within the biometer communications device (1) sensors (3) are used to measure signals corresponding to medical values such as blood pressure, temperature, or pulse rate. The signals are processed and the values calculated for appropriate use. The measured values are compared with stored values and if necessary a stored address can be displayed and a doctor, medical center, etc. automatically informed.
