Abstract: The Mobile and wireless communications Enablers for the Twenty-twenty Information Society (METIS) project is laying the foundations of Fifth Generation (5G) mobile and wireless communication system putting together the point of view of vendors, operators, vertical players, and academia. METIS envisions a 5G system concept that efficiently integrates new applications developed in the METIS horizontal topics and evolved versions of existing services and systems. This article provides a first view on the METIS system concept, highlights the main features including architecture, and addresses the challenges while discussing perspectives for the further research work.

Abstract: Internet traffic has Zipf-like properties at multiple aggregation levels. These properties suggest the possibility of offloading most of the traffic from a complex controller (e.g., a software router) to a simple forwarder (e.g., a commodity switch), by letting the forwarder handle a very limited set of flows; the heavy hitters. As the volume of traffic from a set of flows is highly dynamic, maintaining a reliable set of heavy hitters over time is challenging. This is especially true when we face a volume limit in the non-offloaded traffic in combination with a constraint in the size of the heavy hitter set or its rate of change. We propose a set selection strategy that takes advantage of the properties of heavy hitters at different time scales. Based on real Internet traffic traces, we show that our strategy is able to offload most of the traffic while limiting the rate of change of the heavy hitter set, suggesting the feasibility of alternative router designs.

Abstract: Recent activities in the IRTF (Internet Research Task Force), and in particular in the Routing Research Group (RRG), focus on defining a new Internet architecture, in order to solve scalability issues related to interdomain routing. The research community has agreed that the separation of the end-systems' addressing space (the identifiers) and the routing locators' space will alleviate the routing burden of the Default Free Zone. Nevertheless, such approach, adding a new level of indirection, implies the need of storing and distributing mappings between identifiers and routing locators. In this paper we present LISP-DHT, a mapping distribution system based on Distributed Hash Tables (DHTs). LISP-DHT is designed to take full advantage of the DHT architecture in order to build an efficient and secured mapping lookup system while preserving the locality of the mapping. The paper describes the overall architecture of LISP-DHT, explaining its main points and how it works.

Abstract: For mobile image matching applications, a mobile device captures a query image, extracts descriptive features, and transmits these features wirelessly to a server. The server recognizes the query image by comparing the extracted features to its database and returns information associated with the recognition result. For slow links, query feature compression is crucial for low-latency retrieval. Previous image retrieval systems transmit compressed feature descriptors, which is well suited for pairwise image matching. For fast retrieval from large databases, however, scalable vocabulary trees are commonly employed. In this paper, we propose a rate-efficient codec designed for tree-based retrieval. By encoding a tree histogram, our codec can achieve a more than 5x rate reduction compared to sending compressed feature descriptors. By discarding the order amongst a list of features, histogram coding requires 1.5x lower rate than sending a tree node index for every feature. A statistical analysis is performed to study how the entropy of encoded symbols varies with tree depth and the number of features.

Abstract: A user study was conducted to compare the performance of three methods for map navigation with mobile devices. These methods are joystick navigation, the dynamic peephole method without visual context, and the magic lens paradigm using external visual context. The joystick method is the familiar scrolling and panning of a virtual map keeping the device itself static. In the dynamic peephole method the device is moved and the map is fixed with respect to an external frame of reference, but no visual information is present outside the device's display. The magic lens method augments an external content with graphical overlays, hence providing visual context outside the device display. Here too motion of the device serves to steer navigation. We compare these methods in a study measuring user performance, motion patterns, and subjective preference via questionnaires. The study demonstrates the advantage of dynamic peephole and magic lens interaction over joystick interaction in terms of search time and degree of exploration of the search space.
