16 Apr 2012TL;DR: The architecture of Multi Nets is described, the methodology to perform switching in Linux based mobile OSes such as Android is demonstrated and the experimental results show that depending on the user requirements, it outperforms the state-of-the-art Android system either by saving up to 33.75% energy, or achieving near-optimal offloading, or achieves near-Optimal throughput.
Abstract: In this paper we present Multi Nets, a system which is capable of switching between wireless network interfaces on mobile devices in real-time. Multi Nets is motivated by the need of smart phone platforms to save energy, offload data traffic, and achieve higher throughput. We describe the architecture of Multi Nets and demonstrate the methodology to perform switching in Linux based mobile OSes such as Android. Our analysis on mobile data traces collected from real users shows that with real-time switching we can save 27.4% of the energy, offload 79.82% of the data traffic, or achieve 7 times more throughput on average. We deploy Multi Nets in a real world scenario and our experimental results show that depending on the user requirements, it outperforms the state-of-the-art Android system either by saving up to 33.75% energy, or achieving near-optimal offloading, or achieving near-optimal throughput while substantially reducing TCP interruptions due to switching.

20 May 2008TL;DR: In this article, an ontological-content-based method for filtering and ranking the relevancy of items is presented, which finds general use in the fields of information filtering and publishing, specifically the production of electronic newspapers.
Abstract: The invention is an ontological-content-based method for filtering and ranking the relevancy of items. The filtering method of the invention utilizes a hierarchical ontology, which considers the distance, or similarity between concepts representing each user to concepts representing each item, according to the position of related concepts in the hierarchical ontology. Based on that, the filtering algorithm computes the similarity between the items and users and rank-orders the items according to their relevancy to each user. The method finds general use in the fields of information filtering and publishing, specifically the production of electronic newspapers for which the invention provides methods of filtering and ranking the relevance of news content to specific readers in order to allow production of personalized electronic newspapers.

TL;DR: This paper explicitly describes the requirements for deploying data analytics in a 5G system and subsequently presents the current status of standardization activities, as well as investigating and design of an integrated data analytics framework as a key enabling technology for the service-based architectures (SBAs).
Abstract: Data analytics can be seen as a powerful tool for the fifth-generation (5G) communication system to enable the transformation of the envisioned challenging 5G features into a reality. In the current 5G architecture, some first features toward this direction have been adopted by introducing new functions in core and management domains that can either run analytics on collected communication-related data or can enhance the already supported network functions with statistics collection and prediction capabilities. However, possible further enhancements on 5G architecture may be required, which strongly depend on the requirements as set by vertical customers and the network capabilities as offered by the operator. In addition, the architecture needs to be flexible in order to deal with network changes and service adaptations as requested by verticals. This paper explicitly describes the requirements for deploying data analytics in a 5G system and subsequently presents the current status of standardization activities. The main contribution of this paper is the investigation and design of an integrated data analytics framework as a key enabling technology for the service-based architectures (SBAs). This framework introduces new functional entities for application-level, data network, and access-related analytics to be integrated into the already existing analytics functionalities and examines their interactions in a service-oriented manner. Finally, to demonstrate predictive radio resource management, we showcase a particular implementation for application and radio access network analytics, based on a novel database for collecting and analyzing radio measurements.

24 Apr 2006TL;DR: In this article, a method for verifying access authorization for voice telephony in a fixed network line or mobile telephone line, as well as a communications network having such access authorization verification is described.
Abstract: A method for verifying access authorization for voice telephony in a fixed network line or mobile telephone line, as well as a communications network having such access authorization verification are described. The access authorization is verified by analysis of a voice signal which was entered by the subscriber placing the call, before or during a call in progress. In one variant, the voice signal is entered as a password before the connection is established; in another variant, voice signals are analyzed for voice recognition and subscriber identification, the same voice signals also being transmitted to the person being called, making concealed access verification possible which does not hamper the normal flow of conversation.

TL;DR: In this article, a simple method for the wavelength and line width measurement of optical sources with a resolution in the femtometre range is presented based on the amplification of a backscattered wave by a pump wave due to Brillouin scattering.
Abstract: A new and very simple method for the wavelength and line width measurement of optical sources with a resolution in the femtometre range is presented. Our method is based on the amplification of a backscattered wave by a pump wave due to Brillouin scattering. It requires neither a fast photodiode nor a spectrum analyser of any kind.
