TL;DR: The redesign of the mobile backhaul architecture is investigated and its potential with mobility management as an example is illustrated and the principles of software-defined networking (SDN) are applied.
Abstract: Today's mobile operators face significant challenges with handling the ever increasing volume of mobile data traffic. With new mobile communication standards, the mobile backhaul architecture has a clear split of a packet-only data plane and a management plane. Although this new backhaul architecture yields to easier management, the authors find that this architecture can be improved further by applying the principles of software-defined networking (SDN). SDN allows for better evolvability of the data plane without depending on a slew of management or control protocols, allows for centralized control of the overall infrastructure, and allows for a richer feature set based on its programmable nature. This article investigates the redesign and illustrates its potential with mobility management as an example.

TL;DR: In this article, the influence of signal power, the compensation scheme, and the word length on the performance of 40 Gbit/s RZ single channel transmission over 150 km of standard singlemode fiber at 1.55 /spl mu/m was investigated.
Abstract: Unrepeatered 40 Gbit/s RZ single channel transmission over 150 km of standard singlemode fibre at 1.55 /spl mu/m is reported using passive dispersion compensation. The authors investigate the influence of signal power, the compensation scheme, and the word length. Error-free transmission (BER=10/sup -9/) is achieved with a receiver sensitivity of -27 dBm. Post-compensation allows for higher input powers and therefore for a higher system margin.

TL;DR: MyShake as mentioned in this paper is a global smartphone seismic network that harnesses the power of crowdsourcing to detect and trigger on P-waves and is capable of recording magnitude 2.5 and larger events.
Abstract: MyShake is a global smartphone seismic network that harnesses the power of crowdsourcing. In the first 6 months since the release of the MyShake app, there were almost 200,000 downloads. On a typical day about 8,000 phones provide acceleration waveform data to the MyShake archive. The on-phone app can detect and trigger on P-waves and is capable of recording magnitude 2.5 and larger events. More than 200 seismic events have been recorded so far, including events in Chile, Argentina, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, New Zealand, Taiwan, Japan, and across North America. The largest number of waveforms from a single earthquake to date comes from the M5.2 Borrego Springs earthquake in southern California, for which MyShake collected 103 useful 3-component waveforms. The network continues to grow with new downloads from the Google Play store every day, and expands rapidly when public interest in earthquakes peaks such as during an earthquake sequence.
