TL;DR: The question of the historicity of the Dialogues of Cassiciacum, composed by Augustine shortly before his baptism, is of considerable interest and importance, not only because of the peculiar character of the works themselves, 1 but also because it is maintained by many scholars that the dialogues are not only at variance with, but also more reliable than, the Confessions in their account of Augustine's mental outlook in A.D. 386 as discussed by the authors.
