TL;DR: Studies of amputated feet by dissection and phlebography have demonstrated the anatomical position of the perforating veins between the deep veins of the foot and the dorsal venous arch, and the position ofthe valves in these vessels.
Abstract: Studies of amputated feet by dissection and phlebography have demonstrated the anatomical position of the perforating veins between the deep veins of the foot and the dorsal venous arch, and the position of the valves in these vessels. Valves allow flow towards the dorsal venous arch. A condensed layer of superficial fascia overlies, and may help to support, the dorsal venous arch.

TL;DR: Measurements of the pressures in the deep and superficial veins of the foot during walking and other types of exercise indicate that compression of the deep veins by the contraction of the plantar muscles or by the weight of the body pumps blood along the perforating veins into the superficial veins.
