TL;DR: Bacteriological and histopathological studies of samples obtained from the uteri of dairy cows during the 14 days preceding first service and the 10 days after the first and subsequent services did not indicate that the presence of non-specific infection or endometritis around the time of service was an important cause of infertility in cows which were free from clinically detectable uterine disease.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: Transient infection during the puerperium did not affect fertility; transient infection at a later period reduced fertility to one service, rarely to a second or third service; persistent infection induced chronic purulent endometritis or pyometra accompanied initially by functional anoestrum and, after some months, by organic anoESTrum.

TL;DR: The high isolation rate of Staph.
Abstract: Faecal and nasal carriage of Staphylococcus aureus was sought in 67 in-patients with enteritis due to enteropathic Escherichia coli and in 74 contact in-patients withouth enteritis. There was a significantly higher carriage rate of Staph. aureus in the nose and faeces of patients with enteritis. A quantitative increase also was found in the carriage of faecal staphylococci in these patients. The carriage rate of methicillin resistant Staph. aureus at both sites was twice that of controls. This increase was not found to be due to antibiotic treatment. The presence of Staph. aureus was not associated with increased severity of clinical symptoms. The importance of faecal carriage as a reservoir was shown by isolation of faecal staphylococci from the air during nappy changing. The high isolation rate of Staph. aureus in patients with enteritis may lead to this organism being mistaken for the etiological agent and the need to look for unusual serotypes of enteropathic E. coli in the presence of a typic...

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, the feasibility of separating manure management from pig and poultry production units in the same way that feed production is separated from utilization is examined, and an analytical model is developed to optimize the siting of the store and the determination of the number of tanker wagons to collect and spread the manure.
