Abstract: Large gap dielectric barrier discharges (DBD) provide non-thermal, non-equilibrium plasmas that can generate specific gas chemistry with enhanced bactericidal effects when working in humid air.The present study investigates the post-discharge gas composition of such plasmas operated in humid air using UV–Vis (200–800 nm) absorption spectroscopy. Absorbance spectra have been de-convoluted using direct deconvolution and iterative methods and results are correlated to the DBD electrical parameters.The high-voltage (56 and 70 kV rms) DBD plasma generated at 50 Hz frequency in a closed container over a 20 mm gap in air with relative humidity (RH) of 5–70% has been characterized by I–V and capacitive methods. The post-discharge gas composition at each RH is assessed by UV–Vis absorption spectroscopy for plasma exposure times of 15–120 s. The concentration of ozone and nitrogen oxides (O3, NO2, NO3, N2O4) increases with plasma exposure time but a strong decrease in [O3] levels is obtained with increase in RH. The decrease in [O3] and an abundance of nitrogen oxides is ascribed to high specific power densities in the closed container and to increasing RH levels. The absorbance residual following deconvolution shows a strong band at 230–270 nm consistent with the presence of pernitric acid (HNO4) and other HNOx (x = 1, 3) species. Humid air large gap DBD plasmas in closed containers generate along with O3, high levels of nitrogen oxides and HNOx (x = 1, 4) acids leading to increased bactericidal rates.

Abstract: Cutting ability is an important aspect of many team sports, however, the biomechanical determinants of cutting performance are not well understood. This study aimed to address this issue by identifying the kinetic and kinematic factors correlated with the time to complete a cutting maneuver. In addition, an analysis of the test-retest reliability of all biomechanical measures was performed. Fifteen (n = 15) elite multidirectional sports players (Gaelic hurling) were recruited, and a 3-dimensional motion capture analysis of a 75° cut was undertaken. The factors associated with cutting time were determined using bivariate Pearson's correlations. Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) were used to examine the test-retest reliability of biomechanical measures. Five biomechanical factors were associated with cutting time (2.28 ± 0.11 seconds): peak ankle power (r = 0.77), peak ankle plantar flexor moment (r = 0.65), range of pelvis lateral tilt (r = -0.54), maximum thorax lateral rotation angle (r = 0.51), and total ground contact time (r = -0.48). Intraclass correlation coefficient scores for these 5 factors, and indeed for the majority of the other biomechanical measures, ranged from good to excellent (ICC >0.60). Explosive force production about the ankle, pelvic control during single-limb support, and torso rotation toward the desired direction of travel were all key factors associated with cutting time. These findings should assist in the development of more effective training programs aimed at improving similar cutting performances. In addition, test-retest reliability scores were generally strong, therefore, motion capture techniques seem well placed to further investigate the determinants of cutting ability.

Abstract: In the late 1940s John von Neumann began to work on what he intended as a comprehensive "theory of [complex] automata." He started to develop a book length manuscript on the subject in 1952. However, he put it aside in 1953, apparently due to pressure of other work. Due to his tragically early death in 1957, he was never to return to it. The draft manuscript was eventually edited, and combined for publication with some related lecture transcripts, by Burks in 1966. It is clear from the time and effort that von Neumann invested in it that he considered this to be a very significant and substantial piece of work. However, subsequent commentators (beginning even with Burks) have found it surprisingly difficult to articulate this substance. Indeed, it has since been suggested that von Neumann's results in this area either are trivial, or, at the very least, could have been achieved by much simpler means. It is an enigma. In this paper I review the history of this debate (briefly) and then present my own attempt at resolving the issue by focusing on an analysis of von Neumann's problem situation. I claim that this reveals the true depth of von Neumann's achievement and influence on the subsequent development of this field, and further that it generates a whole family of new consequent problems, which can still serve to inform - if not actually define - the field of artificial life for many years to come.
