Abstract: This paper presents the development of an unsupervised image segmentation framework (referred to as CTex) that is based on the adaptive inclusion of color and texture in the process of data partition. An important contribution of this work consists of a new formulation for the extraction of color features that evaluates the input image in a multispace color representation. To achieve this, we have used the opponent characteristics of the RGB and YIQ color spaces where the key component was the inclusion of the self organizing map (SOM) network in the computation of the dominant colors and estimation of the optimal number of clusters in the image. The texture features are computed using a multichannel texture decomposition scheme based on Gabor filtering. The major contribution of this work resides in the adaptive integration of the color and texture features in a compound mathematical descriptor with the aim of identifying the homogenous regions in the image. This integration is performed by a novel adaptive clustering algorithm that enforces the spatial continuity during the data assignment process. A comprehensive qualitative and quantitative performance evaluation has been carried out and the experimental results indicate that the proposed technique is accurate in capturing the color and texture characteristics when applied to complex natural images.

Abstract: A new portable capillary electrophoresis instrument with capacitively coupled contactless conductivity detection was developed and optimized for the sensitive field measurements of ionic compounds in environmental samples. It is powered by batteries and the high voltage modules are capable of delivering up to 15 kV at either polarity for more than one working day. Inorganic cations and anions, including ions of heavy metals and arsenate, could be determined with detection limits in the range from about 0.2 to 1 mM. The instrument was field tested in a remote region of Tasmania and nitrite and ammonium could be determined on-site at concentrations as low as 10 ppb in presence of other common inorganic ions at concentrations which were 2 to 3 orders of magnitude higher.

Abstract: Myths have come of age in consumer research. In the 22 years since Levy’s inaugural article, the literature has grown at an impressive rate. Yet important questions remain unanswered: What makes some myths especially meaningful to consumers? Why are certain consumer myths more prevalent and less perishable than others? This article argues that ambiguity is an influential factor. Using the RMS Titanic as an empirical exemplar, it unpacks the principal forms of myth-informed ambiguity surrounding “the unsinkable brand.” Predicated on William Empson’s hitherto unsung principles of literary criticism, the article posits that ambiguity in its multifaceted forms is integral to outstanding branding and consumer meaning making, as well as myth appeal more generally.

Abstract: This study examines the impact of a range of demographic variables (gender, firm size, degree type, level of education, length of experience, age and work area) on ethical intentions, ethical judgement, perceived ethical intensity and perceived ethical culture. Cases containing information on four types of time pressure-induced auditor dysfunctional behaviours were distributed to trainee accountants attending a professional education programme of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Ireland. The findings suggest that gender, firm size and degree type had a significant association with ethical decision making. These variables also had a significant association with perceived ethical intensity as did work area. Gender, firm size, level of education and length of experience showed evidence of a significant association with perceived ethical culture. Implications of the findings and areas for further research are discussed.

Abstract: Supramolecular redox-active assemblies on electrodes are of fundamental interest and can be used to create functioning devices such as sensors, biosensors, and bioreactors. The ability of redox-active films to mediate electron transfer reactions in 3-D dramatically increases the sensitivity with which target molecules can be determined. Metallopolyion hydrogel films immobilized on electrode surfaces exhibit many properties that are reminiscent of those shown by redox-active proteins. This review discusses the electrochemical properties and applications of such films, including mediating electron transfer between electrodes and oxidase enzymes. In addition, polyion-protein films grown layer by layer have certain advantages in device fabrication, including facilitating direct electron transfer for many proteins, mechanical stability, use of tiny amounts of protein, and control of film architecture. This review presents examples of iron heme proteins in films grown layer by layer by alternate electrostatic adsorption for catalytic reduction of hydrogen peroxide and trichloroacetic acid and for oxidation of styrene.
