TL;DR: Improvements in endothelial function with physical activity may explain some of the benefits of exercise in subjects with, or at risk for, vascular disease.
Abstract: Endothelial dysfunction occurs early in the atherosclerosis in response to elevated atherosclerotic risk factors, and endothelial dysfunction itself may exacerbate the atherosclerotic process. Treatments that reduce atherosclerotic risk factors also generally improve endothelial function. The present review seeks to summarize the effect of exercise training on endothelial function in human subjects. Cross-sectional studies comparing healthy physically active and inactive subjects as well as longitudinal exercise training studies of healthy individuals show little effect of exercise training on endothelial function. In contrast, both cross-section and longitudinal studies document improved endothelial function with exercise training in subjects with abnormal baseline endothelial function, including the elderly and patients with heart failure or coronary artery disease. Improvements in endothelial function with physical activity may explain some of the benefits of exercise in subjects with, or at risk for, vascular disease.

TL;DR: This paper describes the implementation of various pairings on a contemporary 32-bit smart-card, the Philips HiPerSmart, an instantiation of the MIPS-32 based SmartMIPS architecture, and demonstrates that pairings can be calculated as efficiently as classic cryptographic primitives on this architecture.
Abstract: Pairings on elliptic curves are fast coming of age as cryptographic primitives for deployment in new security applications, particularly in the context of implementations of Identity-Based Encryption (IBE). In this paper we describe the implementation of various pairings on a contemporary 32-bit smart-card, the Philips HiPerSmartTM, an instantiation of the MIPS-32 based SmartMIPSTM architecture. Three types of pairing are considered, first the standard Tate pairing on a nonsupersingular curve $E(\mathbb{F}_p)$, second the Ate pairing, also on a nonsupersingular curve $E(\mathbb{F}_p)$, and finally the ηT pairing on a supersingular curve $E(\mathbb{F}_{2^m})$. We demonstrate that pairings can be calculated as efficiently as classic cryptographic primitives on this architecture, with a calculation time of as little as 0.15 seconds.

TL;DR: The extent to which the model of governance offered by blockchain technologies reflect s key governance themes and assumptions located within social contract theories is examined, focusing on the notions of sovereignty, the initial situation, decentralization and distributive justice.
Abstract: This paper is placed in the context of a growing number of social and political crit iq ues of blockchain technologies. We focus on the supposed potential of blockchain technologies to transform political institutions that are central to contemporary human societies, such as money, property right s regimes , and systems of democratic governance. Our aim is to examine the way blockchain technologies can bring about - and justify - new models of governance . To do so, w e draw on the philosophical works of Hobbes , Rousseau , and Rawls , analyzing blockchain governance in terms of contrasting social contract theories . We begin by comparing the justifications of blockchain governance offered by members of the blockchain developers ’ community with the justifications of governance presented with in social contract theories . We then examine the extent to which the model of governance offered by blockchain technologies reflect s key governance themes and assumptions located within social contract theories , focusing on the notions of sovereignty, the initial situation, decentralization and distributive justice .

TL;DR: In this article, an efficient Tate and Ate pairings using Barreto-Naehrig pairing-friendly curves is described on both a standard PC and on a 32-bit smartcard.
Abstract: In this paper we describe an efficient implementation of the Tate and Ate pairings using Barreto-Naehrig pairing-friendly curves, on both a standard PC and on a 32-bit smartcard. First we introduce a subfamily of such curves with a particularly simple representation. Next we consider the issues that arise in the efficient implemention of field arithmetic in F p12, which is crucial to good performance. Various optimisations are suggested, including a novel approach to the 'final exponentiation', which is faster and requires less memory than the methods previously recommended.

TL;DR: Investigations have shown that supramolecular devices consisting of photosynthetic reaction centres and catalyst metals--connected via bridging ligands--are capable of performing light driven catalytic reactions such as hydrogen production, reduction of CO(2), and conversion reactions of olefins.
Abstract: In view of diminishing resources and an ever increasing demand for energy attention has been directed towards the development of new photocatalytic systems modelling natural photosynthesis. Recent investigations have shown that supramolecular devices consisting of photosynthetic reaction centres and catalyst metals--connected via bridging ligands--are capable of performing light driven catalytic reactions such as hydrogen production, reduction of CO(2), and conversion reactions of olefins.
