TL;DR: In a radiationless process, electronic excitation energy can be transported in the photonic antennae presented herein from the borders to the center of cylindrical zeolite L crystals.
Abstract: Organic dye molecules tend to form aggregates which areknown to cause fast thermal relaxation of the electronicallyexcited states They are often unstable on irradiation undermany conditions Encapsulation in an appropriate host notonly prevents the dyes from dimerization and protects themagainst unwanted bimolecular reactions and isomerization, but it can also lead to supramolecular organization We foundthat zeolite L is a very suitable host material for the develop-ment of organic/inorganic composites with photonic antennaproperties for light harvesting and transport

TL;DR: In this article, the authors experimentally investigate microlasers of simple shapes (Fabry-Perot, square, pentagon, and disk) and show that their lasing spectra consist mainly of almost equidistant peaks and the distance between peaks reveals the length of a quantized periodic orbit.
Abstract: Dielectric microcavities are widely used as laser resonators and characterizations of their spectra are of interest for various applications. We experimentally investigate microlasers of simple shapes (Fabry-Perot, square, pentagon, and disk). Their lasing spectra consist mainly of almost equidistant peaks and the distance between peaks reveals the length of a quantized periodic orbit. To measure this length with a good precision, it is necessary to take into account different sources of refractive index dispersion. Our experimental and numerical results agree with the superscar model describing the formation of long-lived states in polygonal cavities. The limitations of the two-dimensional approximation are briefly discussed in connection with microdisks.

TL;DR: In this paper, the synthesis of a ditopic fluorescent sensor for cations associating a 1,3 alternate calix[4]bisazacrown-5 as an ionophore and substituted boron-dipyrromethene dyes as fluorophores is reported.
Abstract: The synthesis of a ditopic fluorescent sensor for cations associating a 1,3 alternate calix[4]bisazacrown-5 as an ionophore and substituted boron-dipyrromethene dyes as fluorophores is reported. Photophysical studies revealed that in medium and high polarity solvents an efficient charge transfer (CT) reaction occurs in the excited state leading to a dual emission and a strong quenching of fluorescence. This CT process is either totally suppressed by amino group protonation or hampered by cation complexation; in both cases, a strong fluorescence enhancement is observed. This “switching-on” of the emission is more pronounced when two cations are coordinated. The stability constants of complexes with sodium, potassium, caesium, calcium and barium cations were measured in acetonitrile and ethanol. The system shows a high sensitivity and selectivity for potassium over other metal ions. A test under physiological conditions was successfully achieved.

TL;DR: In this paper, a list of selected reference values of steady-state fluorescence anisotropy and polarization is given, along with a recommendation for checking the accuracy of measure ments.
Abstract: After recalling the basic relations relevant to both steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence polarization, it is shown how the values of steady-state polarized intensities recorded experimentally usually need to be corrected for systematic effects and errors, caused by instrumentation and sample properties. A list of selected reference values of steady-state fluorescence anisotropy and polarization is given. Attention is also paid to analy- sis of time-resolved fluorescence anisotropy data obtained by pulse fluorometry or phase and modulation fluorometry techniques. Recommendations for checking the accuracy of measure ments are provided together with a list of selected time-resolved fluorescence anisotropy data as reported in the literature.

TL;DR: In this paper, a convex mixed penalty was introduced to solve the link prediction problem in the context of social networks or protein interactions, where underlying graphs have adjacency matrices which are block-diagonal in the appropriate basis.
Abstract: The paper introduces a penalized matrix estimation procedure aiming at solutions which are sparse and low-rank at the same time. Such structures arise in the context of social networks or protein interactions where underlying graphs have adjacency matrices which are block-diagonal in the appropriate basis. We introduce a convex mixed penalty which involves $\ell_1$-norm and trace norm simultaneously. We obtain an oracle inequality which indicates how the two effects interact according to the nature of the target matrix. We bound generalization error in the link prediction problem. We also develop proximal descent strategies to solve the optimization problem efficiently and evaluate performance on synthetic and real data sets.
