Abstract: Sequence similarity searching is an important and challenging task in molecular biology and next-generation sequencing should further strengthen the need for faster algorithms to process such vast amounts of data. At the same time, the internal architecture of current microprocessors is tending towards more parallelism, leading to the use of chips with two, four and more cores integrated on the same die. The main purpose of this work was to design an effective algorithm to fit with the parallel capabilities of modern microprocessors. A parallel algorithm for comparing large genomic banks and targeting middle-range computers has been developed and implemented in PLAST software. The algorithm exploits two key parallel features of existing and future microprocessors: the SIMD programming model (SSE instruction set) and the multithreading concept (multicore). Compared to multithreaded BLAST software, tests performed on an 8-processor server have shown speedup ranging from 3 to 6 with a similar level of accuracy. A parallel algorithmic approach driven by the knowledge of the internal microprocessor architecture allows significant speedup to be obtained while preserving standard sensitivity for similarity search problems.

Abstract: A new solution-processable small-molecule containing electron-poor naphthalene diimide and tetrazine moieties has been synthesized. The optimized spin-coated n-channel OFETs on glass substrate shows electron mobility value up to 0.15 cm(2) V(-1) s(-1) . Inkjet-printed OFETs are fabricated in ambient atmosphere on flexible plastic substrates, which exhibits an electron mobility value up to 0.17 cm(2) V(-1) s(-1) and also shows excellent environmental and operational stability.

Abstract: Nineteen biscoumarins bearing free and modified hydroxyl substituents at benzoyloxyphenyl linker have been synthesized by multiple step synthesis. Among these biscoumarins, thirteen were found to be active molecules against HIV-1 integrase (HIV-1 IN). The structure-activity relationship of the nineteen compounds on HIV IN may be useful for the design of potent therapeutic agents.

Abstract: Rosmarinic acid was reacted with nitrite ions under acidic conditions to give 6'-nitro- and 6',6''-dinitrorosmarinic acids according to the reaction time. Both compounds were active as HIV-1 integrase inhibitors at the submicromolar level. They also inhibited the viral replication in MT-4 cells with modest and similar selectivity indexes. The nitration of rosmarinic acid strongly improves the anti-integrase inhibition and the antiviral activity without increasing the cellular toxicity.

Abstract: Since the beginning, Mathematical Morphology has proposed to extract shapesfrom images as connected components of level sets. These methods have proved veryefficient in shape recognition and shape analysis. In this paper, we present an improved method to select the most meaningful level lines (boundaries of level sets) from an image. This extraction can be based on statistical arguments, leading to a parameter free algorithm. It permits to roughly extract all pieces of level lines of an image, that coincide with pieces of edges. By this method, the numberof encoded level lines is reduced by a factor 100, without any loss of shape contents. In contrast to edge detection algorithms or snakes methods, such a level lines selection method delivers accurate shape elements, without user parameter since selection parameters can be computed by the Helmholtz Principle. The paper aims at improving the original method proposed in [10]. We give a mathematicalinterpretation of the model, which explains why some pieces of curve are overdetected. We introduce a multiscale approach that makes the method more robust to noise. A more local algorithm is introduced, taking local contrast variations into account. Finally, we empirically prove that regularity makes detection more robust but does not qualitatively change the results.
