Abstract: We report on the efficient design and fabrication of polymeric microracetrack optical resonators for label-free biosensing purposes. Vertically-coupled microresonators immersed in deionised water display high Q-factors (>35000) and finesses up to 25. A surface sensing experiment performed with these microresonators using 5-TAMRA cadaverine as a test molecule demonstrated both the high sensitivity and low detection limit of our device.

Abstract: In this article, the synthesis of a novel high-conjugated ligand and its corresponding Ru(II) complex PTFTF:Ru is reported, along with the linear and nonlinear optical characterizations. Two-photon absorption based optical power limiting properties (OPL), especially in the near infrared, are described and compared to those of the analogous complexes previously published. Combined with a preliminary theoretical approach, this allows us to highlight several key parameters for OPL optimization in such molecular systems and more particularly the spectral overlap between TPA and excited-state absorption.

Abstract: XPath is a prominent W3C standard for navigating XML documents that has stimulated a lot of research into query answering and static analysis. In particular, query containment has been studied extensively for fragments of the 1.0 version of this standard, whereas little is known about query containment in (fragments of) the richer language XPath 2.0. In this article, we consider extensions of CoreXPath, the navigational core of XPath 1.0, with operators that are part of or inspired by XPath 2.0: path intersection, path equality, path complementation, for-loops, and transitive closure. For each combination of these operators, we determine the complexity of query containment, both with and without DTDs. It turns out to range from ExpTime (for extensions with path equality) and 2-ExpTime (for extensions with path intersection) to non-elementary (for extensions with path complementation or for-loops). In almost all cases, adding transitive closure on top has no further impact on the complexity. We also investigate the effect of dropping the upward and/or sibling axes, and show that this sometimes leads to a reduction in complexity. Since the languages we study include negation and conjunction in filters, our complexity results can equivalently be stated in terms of satisfiability. We also analyze the above languages in terms of succinctness.

Abstract: While a mature theory around logics such as MSO, LTL, and CTL has been developed in the pure boolean setting of finite automata, weighted automata lack such a natural connection with (temporal) logic and related verification algorithms. In this paper, we will identify weighted versions of MSO and CTL that generalize the classical logics and even other quantitative extensions such as probabilistic CTL. We establish expressiveness results on our logics giving translations from weighted and probabilistic CTL into weighted MSO.

Abstract: Three photochromic compounds--2-butyl-5,6-bis[5-(4-methoxyphenyl)-2-methylthiophen-3-yl]-1 H-benzo[de]isoquinoline-1,3(2 H)-dione (BTE-NA), 4,5-bis[5-(4-methoxyphenyl)-2-methylthiophen-3-yl]benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole (BTA), and BTTA, which contain naphthalimide, benzothiadiazole, and benzobisthiadiazole as six-membered ethene bridges with different aromaticities--were systematically studied in solution, sol-gel, and single-crystal states. They exhibit typical photochromic performance with considerably high cyclization quantum yields. BTE-NA, BTA, and BTTA form a typical donor-π-acceptor (D-π-A) system with significant intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) between HOMO and LUMO upon excitation, thus realizing the fluorescence modulation by both photochromism and solvatochromism. The three ethene bridges with different degrees of aromaticity can provide a systematic comparison of the thermal stability evolution for their corresponding closed forms (c-BTE-NA, c-BTA, and c-BTTA). c-BTE-NA shows first-order decay in various solvents from cyclohexane to acetonitrile. c-BTA only shows first-order decay in polar solvents such as chloroform, whereas it is stable in nonpolar solvents like toluene. In contrast, the less aromatic property of BTTA gives rise to its unprecedented thermal stability in various solvents even at elevated temperatures in toluene (328 K). Moreover, the small energy barrier between the parallel and antiparallel conformers allows the full conversion from BTTA to c-BTTA. In well-ordered crystal states, all three compounds adopt a parallel conformation. Interestingly, BTTA forms a twin crystal of asymmetric nature with interactions between the electron-rich oxygen atom of the methoxy group and the carbon atom of the electron-deficient benzobisthiadiazole moiety. This work contributes to the understanding of aromaticity-controlled thermal stability of photochromic systems based on a six-membered ring as an ethene bridge, and a broadening of the novel building blocks for photochromic bisthienylethene systems.
