TL;DR: The Peregrine soliton was observed experimentally for the first time by using femtosecond pulses in an optical fiber as mentioned in this paper, which gave some insight into freak waves that can appear out of nowhere before simply disappearing.
Abstract: The Peregrine soliton — a wave localized in both space and time — is now observed experimentally for the first time by using femtosecond pulses in an optical fibre. The results give some insight into freak waves that can appear out of nowhere before simply disappearing.

01 Sep 2001TL;DR: It turns out that this mathematics involves new properties of various Besov-type function spaces and leads to many deep results, including new generalizations of famous Gagliardo-Nirenberg and Poincare inequalities.
Abstract: From the Publisher:
"Image compression, the Navier-Stokes equations, and detection of gravitational waves are three seemingly unrelated scientific problems that, remarkably, can be studied from one perspective. The notion that unifies the three problems is that of "oscillating patterns", which are present in many natural images, help to explain nonlinear equations. and are pivotal in studying chirps and frequency-modulated signals." "In the book, the author describes both what the oscillating patterns are and the mathematics necessary for their analysis. It turns out that this mathematics involves new properties of various Besov-type function spaces and leads to many deep results, including new generalizations of famous Gagliardo-Nirenberg and Poincare inequalities." This book can be used either as a textbook in studying applications of wavelets to image processing or as a supplementary resource for studying nonlinear evolution equations or frequency-modulated signals. Most of the material in the book did not appear previously in monograph literature.

TL;DR: It is shown how certain nonconvex optimization problems that arise in image processing and computer vision can be restated as convex minimization problems, which allows, in particular, the finding of global minimizers via standard conveX minimization schemes.
Abstract: We show how certain nonconvex optimization problems that arise in image processing and computer vision can be restated as convex minimization problems. This allows, in particular, the finding of global minimizers via standard convex minimization schemes.

TL;DR: This scheme can remove salt-and-pepper-noise with a noise level as high as 90% and show a significant improvement compared to those restored by using just nonlinear filters or regularization methods only.
Abstract: This paper proposes a two-phase scheme for removing salt-and-pepper impulse noise. In the first phase, an adaptive median filter is used to identify pixels which are likely to be contaminated by noise (noise candidates). In the second phase, the image is restored using a specialized regularization method that applies only to those selected noise candidates. In terms of edge preservation and noise suppression, our restored images show a significant improvement compared to those restored by using just nonlinear filters or regularization methods only. Our scheme can remove salt-and-pepper-noise with a noise level as high as 90%.
